UWLHC's Charities for 2011-2012 are...

The main charity that UWLHC will be raising money for this year is the 'Debbie Fund'. Here is a message about the 'Debbie Fund' and their work from our 2nd XI Captain, Iggy Duncan, who nominated the 'Debbie Fund' to be our charity this year:

"The 'Debbie Fund' is incredibly personal to me and was set up after one of my Mum's best friends, and the Mother of a girl I went to school with, died of cervical cancer last year. Cervical cancer is pretty much symptomless, and by the time it was discovered in Debbie it was too late. In 2008, when it became obvious that Debbie was not going to survive by standard treatments, her husband discovered that there was no dedicated drug development research programme looking specifically into the treatment of cervical cancer anywhere in the world. This is what the 'Debbie Fund' is looking to change.

There are many reasons why the cancer is incredibly relevant to the ladies of the UWLHC. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common female cancer with around half a million new cases per year and a quarter of a million deaths. In the UK there are around 3000 new cases per year of which half are women under the age of 50. The five year survival rate is around 64% reflecting the poor outcome using currently available therapies.

The 'Debbie Fund' has set up a lab in UCL and there are a team of scientists who have already begun to make some break throughs in their research, but they still need more money to help fund their investigations. Through supporting this charity perhaps one day there will be a woman who will be able to say that she was cured of cervical cancer thanks to the work of the 'Debbie Fund'.

It means so much to me that we are supporting this charity as it is so incredibly exciting and worthwhile! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for The 'Debbie Fund'. I really am very grateful."

Alongside fundraising for the 'Debbie Fund', UWLHC are continuing their involvement with 'Right to Play' and 'Hungry for Hockey' this year as well as introducing a new link to the 'Leamington Dolphins' (a swimming class for handicapped children under the age of 18). UWLHC host a variety of fundraising events and really do put a lot of effort into their charity work so we are extremely grateful for anyone who supports us with this effort.
