The University of Warwick Ladies Hockey Club has always been involved in charitable and community work, and having introduced a charity secretary to the executive committee in the 2009-2010 season, our work has gone from strength to strength.
Having chosen Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign and Kenilworth Helping Hands Club (a charitable social club for disabled young people) as our main sponsored charities for the past two years, UWLHC prides itself on many charity and community driven ventures undertaken during this time. During autumn 2009 UWLHC joined forces with the Men’s club to revive the ‘Hungry for Hockey’ coaching initiative for the schools in the local area, beginning with Ernesford Grange, Richard Lee and St Augustine’s primary schools.
Volunteer coaches from both clubs visited the schools weekly to run workshops and drills to introduce the children to Hockey and its rules, and continue their development and game play as the initiative progressed. At the end of the year, the schools visited the University to take part in a fun inter-school competition and enjoy the facilities available. The initiative continued in the 2010-2011 season and has now become a well established part of UWLHC’s charity and community endeavours.
The hard work and effort behind the ‘Hungry for Hockey’ initiative was acknowledged by Warwick Volunteers, who presented both clubs with the Warwick Volunteers Community Award at the 2010 annual Sports Federation Ball which involves all sports club affiliated to the University of Warwick.
The 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons both saw UWLHC take part in a half marathon, again alongside the Men’s club, to raise money for our sponsored charities. Both attempts were highly successful with more than £2000 raised each time.
Other events UWLHC has organised and taken part in have included talent shows/pub quizzes involving club members, the Warwick Sport naked calendar, blood donation drives, kit appeals for children from disadvantaged areas, an annual outdoor charity hockey tournament and annual charity hockey match against the University’s Men’s Rugby club. The 2010-11 season has seen a continuation of traditional events alongside the introduction of new endeavours, such as the joint successful attempt with the Ladies Netball club to swim the length of the English Channel in the University swimming pool.
