Match Report by our Roving Reporter Simon George
The squad and 12 thirsty Dad’s arrived at Devizes Rugby Club for the first tour fixture. an evening game and spent some time running the coach journey out of their legs during the warm up. With the parents also keen to warm up their drinking arms there was some despondency as we realised that the bar would not be open for another hour or so.
With the game kicking off at 6pm Upminster made a somewhat ragged start. In fact it was Devizes who were dominant in the early exchanges and only some decent cover defence prevented them taking the lead as the boys struggled to get into their stride. It was therefore no real surprise when after 15 minutes Devizes opened the scoring from a neatly worked blindside move and took a 5-0 lead. This seemed to spark the boys in to life and U’s responded almost immediately when Tommo finished off a fine move to score after 19 minutes. With Jamie’s successful conversion the score was 7-5 and this was doubled two minutes later when Jack Walker powered over from close range for another try converted by Jamie. This could have seen Devizes heads drop as they had performed well in the first half, however they continued to pressure U’s line and on the stroke of half time they scored their second unconverted try following another blindside move, this time from a 5m lineout. Half time 14-10.
Upminster rang the changes at half-time to ensure each player got at least half a game. This coincided with a change of fortune as Upminster got their running and offloading game going and it was soon evident that Devizes would not be able to cope with the pace of the game. Blaine opened the second half scoring after 6 minutes and this was soon added to as tries came at regular intervals after that. Jamie added a try following a fine offload from Adam and this was followed by further efforts from Nathan, Jamie with his second and Tommo, also with his second. The game was rounded off with another try, this time from Ross O, who gleefully slotted the conversion himself with a drop kick from the touchline (poetic licence there!)
And so the squad adjourned to the clubhouse having ended up 48-10 victors. The evening festivities soon took shape as the team took it in turns to mix spoonfuls of cinnamon washed down with various liquid concoctions. The boys mixed well with their opposition and some of the opposition supporters which was good to see. In fact it would be fair to say “It made me feel like dancing”, watching the boys having so much fun.
And so an eventful day ended with a return to our 5 star facilities, where the boys were able to tuck themselves up in bed for an early night, whilst the Dad’s chose the comfort of the Coffee Lounge before lights out at 11pm.
And if you believe that, you will believe anything!
