NEW HEAD COACH
Upton Rugby Club have appointed a new Head Coach Ben Hughes.
Ben is a former Gloucester, Worcester Warriors and Stourbridge captain , and has most recently coached Old Halesonians, so he brings a huge amount of rugby experience to Upton.
Previous coach Oli Banwell has moved up to Director of Rugby and his first job was find a coach capable to moving Upton forward.
‘Ive been involved with Upton Rugby in some form or another since it was founded in 1981 when I was 5 year old. This is the most excited ive been in that time as we have a man of Ben’s calibre coming to the club. Ben has played at such a high level but it was evident from my meetings with him that he is really looking forward to putting something into the community and helping develop Upton’.
Ben’s children are involved in the mini junior section of the club but it was the link with ex Old Halesonians and present Herford & Worcestershire, North Midlands star Max Macfarlane that helpd bring him to the club. Former first team skipper Macfarlane returned to the club in Febraury and speaks highly of Hughes.
Hughes will be assisted by Banwell, Macfarlane, and Dan Keyte but Banwell explained there are more appointments to come.
‘We have another player/coach joining the club as well to assist with the coaching and this is what makes me excited. The team of coaches we have can only help develop the players.’
Banwell is keen to strengthen the team as well. ‘We’ve lost a couple of players over the summer period for one reason or another so we are looking for new or returning players to be enticed by the arrival of Ben and his playing history.
Banwell Summarised the pre season programme. ‘Pre-season training will commence Tuesday 4th July from 7pm - 9pm. We train on Tuesday & Thursday and it is vital for the club going forward that the players make this commitment. We hope the news of our new Head Coach will help bring players along and see what Upton has to offer.
