Upton blown away in Coventry
Storm Bryan blows Upton off course
In wet and wild conditions Upton got bullied by the home side and came away with nothing after last week’s bonus point win.
With key players missing from the pack Upton lacked the physicality to cope with the home sides powerful running and offloading game. Having lost the toss and asked to play down the hill with the wind Upton knew they needed a good start and this was not forthcoming as Old Covs played with an intensity that Upton did just not have.
By 20 minutes into the half Upton were three tries down but as they were unconverted the home side only led 15-0 despite their dominance.
Upton did reduce the arrears with a Rob Heeley penalty and then Joe Ayres finished off a good break from George Ainge. Heeley converted to make it 15-10 but right from the kick off Old Covs secured a bonus point with their fourth try to make it 20-10 at half time.
However Upton were up against it in the second half as the wind strengthened and playing up the slope. However the first 15 minutes saw Upton stay in touch before the conditions started to take their toll and Upton seemed to hammering against a brick wall. The visitors just couldn’t seem to get hold of the ball and Old Covs just kept kicking downfield and pinning Upton in their own 22. To only concede another 4 tries was almost something that Upton deserved praise for in these conditions. This gave Old Covs a 34 point cushion at 44-10 before Will Miekle snaked his way through to score under the posts for a consolation which Will Dovey converted.
