Bright Start to the Season for U14s
Second half performance just too much for opposition
The season opener started in typical style for the U14’s who conceded a try within the first five minutes. Uphill and against the wind the signs looked ominous. Poor handling by the backs handed Veseyans an advantage opportunity which their big powereful number 8 gleefully took (conversion missed 5-0). A big side all across the park meant that Upton had some play to their strengths. Veseyans had plenty of possession early on and Upton dug deep defensively. Finally, a knock on gave Upton the chance to gain some possession. At the first scrum Uptons smaller pack made up for the size difference with some superior scrummaging technique holding the heavier pack and retaining possession. That set the tone for the game with Uptons technique overcoming the heavier Veseyans pack.
More backs handling errors meant that Upton failed to get going until late in the first period, being put under constant pressure, however, superb defensive work and stout tackling ensured Veseyans didn't cross the whitewash again. Finally with the first half nearing the end Upton managed to break out of their half and were now in the Veseyans 22. A knock on from the opposition presented their first opportunity. From the resulting scrum Oli passed out to Billy at No 10, who drew his man and popped the ball to inside centre Tom who still had work to do but managed to get across in the corner. It was a difficult first attempt for Rhys who pulled the resulting conversion to the left of the uprights(5-5).
Half time 5-5
The second half start in similar fashion to the first, with an early Veseyans try after a breakaway from their rapid winger. He went in under the posts and they converted the kick (10-5). From this point on it was one way traffic as the Upton forwards put pressure in their counterparts forcing turnovers and handling errors. The Upton scrum continued to drive Veseyans backwards and Samuel picked up and went in under the posts. Rhys converted (10-12).
A change in scrum half saw Upton get quicker ball from Ben and he fizzed a pass to Billy coming in at pace who stepped his defender and passed out to Connor, making his debut on the wing, who stepped back inside and over the line for try number 3. Conversion scored (10-19).
Uptons forward dominance continued and they took two scrums against the head, driving Veseyans backwards. From a scrum well inside Uptons half the ball went back to Billy who put a huge clearence down into the Veseyans 22 for a lineout. At the lineout Veseyans tried to clear, but Uptons quick defensive line put the pressure on forcing another knock on. From the resulting scrum Luke picked and ran, offloading to fellow back row Jay, who went over for try number 4 which Rhys converted (10-26).
Try number 5 again came from forwards dominance in the scrum. Dave Gowers tuesday evening scrummaging masterclass paying off as Sam powered through the Veseyans defensive line and under the posts for a second time with an almost identical try. Rhys finished the scoring (10-33) for Upton before Veseyans got a consolation try in the final minutes (17-33). By this time the game was already won. A positive start but still much to be done with a very tough away trip to Evesham in two weeks after the Warriors Festival.
