Ladies'1s miss out on weekend double through penalty strokes.

Urmston’s Ladies’ 1st XI were denied a place in the next round of the England Hockey Women’s Trophy on Sunday at the cruel hand of penalty strokes against Newcastle Ladies 1st XI.

After Dannielle Harvey and Stacey Bell had fired Urmston into a 2-0 lead, the visiting side rallied to level the scores and send the game to penalties.

Harvey and Nicola Jeffries converted for the home side but Newcastle were too clinical for the Greens, triumphing 4-2 in the shootout.

Their close encounter came on the back of an emphatic 4-1 league win against local rivals Didsbury Northern Ladies’ 2nd XI on Saturday.

Players’ Player Becky Crossley was on target for Urmston in a commanding all-round performance, joined by Jess Walton, Harvey, and Bell to fire them up to sixth in the table.

Elsewhere, it was a weekend to forget as unbeaten and winning runs were halted for the Men’s 1st XI, Men’s 2nd XI, and Ladies’ 2nd XI.

Robin Cooper, Mike Tonge, and Owen Monk put the Men’s 1st XI into a 3-2 lead only for the University of Liverpool Men’s 1st XI to edge Urmston with two late goals despite a rejuvenated performance from Man of the Match, Brad Bates.

The Men’s 2nd XI headed to Keswick, buoyant from a six-game winning streak but the Cumbrian side ran out 2-1 winners despite Nick Wilson’s goal and Pete Wood’s Man of the Match performance.

Prescot ended the Ladies’ 2nd XI’s five-game unbeaten run as they ran out with an emphatic 5-0 win while the nine-player Ladies’ 3rd XI also suffered a 9-0 loss at the hands of University of Manchester Women’s 5th XI.

Danny Downes’ star keeps rising however, with another goal in a 4-2 loss to Horwich Men’s 1st XI with Tom Frame’s critical link-up play earning him Man of the Match and Jim Mair’s work rate producing an impressive personal performance.
