Opening game of the season
A Narrow Defeat
The 2nd team opening game although ending in a narrow loss provided many positives for the development side. Combining a mix of younger and more experienced players, this is the first time the 2nd team have played in the Staffordshire Merit league. Starting well against a clearly experienced Lichfield side, with a handful of the opposition showing they had obviously played at a higher level. Will Hulme and Matt Williams led the way with crunching tackles to halt Lichfield’s strong centres. The game ebbed and flowed in the first half, with Uttoxeter being solid in the scrum and executing very successful “textbook” lineouts. Harry Bettany at fly half was unleashing the back line at every opportunity, eventually crossing the line himself for a nicely worked try which he converted. Lichfield came back into the game with a couple of tries created basically from Uttoxeter mistakes. Dave Atherton scored next for Uttoxeter after a fine team try creating an overlap in the right corner, again Bettany converted from wide. A questionable penalty was taken quickly by Lichfield, and whilst the Uttoxeter players were still bemused by the decision, the pacey Lichfield centre ran through the entire team untouched to score under the posts. With 10 minutes to go Lichfield were leading 27 – 14 but an excellent opportunist try from veteran Matt Williams saw him run in from the half way line, Bettany again converted to bring Uttoxeter to within a converted try of Lichfield but the game ended 27 – 21. An excellent team performance especially from the younger players, Man of the match sponsored by Dryacotts Estate Agents went to scrum half Ashton Harrison who’s work rate was outstanding and didn’t miss a tackle all game.
