| Canvey Island | 4 | vs | 2 | Uxbridge |
Reds defeated in Trophy replay!
Uxbridge bowed out of the competition last night going down 4-2 to Canvey Island, as we gave it our all once more against our Ryman Premier opponents.
It was another good end to end and well contested tie from both sides with plenty of goalmouth action to enjoy.
Ultimately however, one or two decisions didn't go for us that might of had a different effect on how the match would have looked on another night.
The Seasiders went ahead with only five minutes gone, as the dangerous Louis Dennis sent over a cross from which Mark Smith's attempted clearance struck captain Wayne Carter for an unfortunate own goal.
We almost got level on a couple of occasions, with Chris Moore having his effort blocked by Andre Foster and soon after Craig Tomkins drove in a fierce shot into Foster's body with the ball bouncing out, but disappointingly Shaun Lucien hit the rebound at him.
Then came a wave of Canvey attack's that caused us problems to deal with.
Skipper Robbie King's headed against his own player and Bradley Woods-Garness hammered in a shot which hit Rob Fitzgerald on the goal-line!
Dennis beat Chris Owens on the right and he moved swiftly into the box and his drive was saved well by Matt Elston-Bull with his outstretched boot.
Elston-Bull flung himself superbly to save one-handed from Dennis for a corner, and it was taken by Harrison Chatting to King who sent in a well directed header that was scrambled off the line by Mark Smith.
However, under all this pressure we scored a quality goal from MOORE when he turned his marker well to fire beyond Foster into the bottom corner to make it one each on 28 minutes.
We had to thank Mark Dennison for some hardened defending, as he got in a timely challenge to stop Dennis dead in his tracks, with the home team going up a gear again.
Elston-Bull saved bravely at his near post to beat away James Hawes shot, and Dennison again was in the thick of it to interveen once more to halt Ashley Miller's threat from defence as he looked likely to score.
The second-half was just five minutes old, when Tomkins flighted a perfect free-kick for DENNISON to nod home powerfully and put us ahead.
Then came a crucial point in the game.
Tomkins thought he had won us a penalty when his touch hit Miller on the hand, but the linesman threw up his flag for offside against Tomkins after the ref had pointed to the spot. It looked a very tight call by the ref's assistant!
Our frustration was compiled when a long ball down the centre saw DENNIS clip the ball over the advancing Elston-Bull to make it all square again.
Canvey were awarded two penalties in the space of six minutes!
First in the 65th minute Tomkins was adjudged to have nudged Richard Orlu in the back with his elbow, but there seemed little contact and with the lack of appeals by the Canvey players it seemed to be a soft penalty.
KING made no mistake with his spot-kick.
Then a very awkward looking corner to defend from Harrison caused Fitzgerald to pull on the arm of KING in the ref's view!, and up stepped the same player to make it 4-2.
We had a couple of good late chances to score again, when sub Nicke Kabamba struck his shot straight at Foster.
On 90 minutes Kabamba won a penalty for his persistance in causing sub Mitch Gilbey to handle the ball in the area, but Moore's well struck spot-kick was smartly saved by Foster.
