Uxbridge succumb to first defeat of 2018 at home to Cuffley
Cuffley forward dominance pays dividends as errors cost Uxbridge dear.
Uxbridge returned home for the second home game of 2018 on the back of a three game winning streak in the league against a Cuffley side who have been riding well in the table.
The game began in earnest on what can only be described as a heavy pitch with both sets of forwards trying to assert their dominance early on.
The opening points went the way of the home side as carries from Jake Lamport, Mark Coles and Adam Webster made dents in the visitor defence before No.8 Sam Dillamore smashed his way over the line to dot the ball down. Fly-half, Mark Wils added the extras.
This whirred Cuffley into action and a combination of clever kicking and hard running in the centres, put the Uxbridge line under attack.
The defence held firm under intense pressure with the forwards digging in to hold the generously-built Cuffley forwards at bay.
Eventually a penalty was conceded on the five metre line and Cuffley got a shove on to drive ball over the line and open their account, before adding the extras.
Uxbridge introduced Lewis Edwards in the front row playing into the wind in the second half and found the going tough unable to put together multiple phases to break through the Cuffley line and play the expansive game they wanted to play. The defence held strong and in the face of constant pressure only buckled when the Cuffley back line found a dog-leg and raced through to score. The conversion was missed.
As the game neared its conclusion, it became a scrappy affair with a litany of knock-ons, drop balls and turnovers but Uxbridge could not find the gap to repeat their recent tricks of stealing the game at the death.
Final score Uxbridge-7, Cuffley-12.
