Uxbridge XV record victory over Southgate
Uxbridge score seven tries in friendly to record home win against Southgate
With neither side having a scheduled game, an Uxbridge XV and Southgate met for a friendly on a cold wet day at Gatting Way.
The game kicked off with the home side showing good shape and intensity in their running to stretch the visitors defence with purposeful running from Sean McAndrew and young fly-half Michael De Jager.
The opening score for Uxbridge came as the ball was shipped wide to Jack Moceica to cut back in and score under the posts. The following conversion was successful to give Uxbridge a 7-0 lead. The Uxbridge forwards continued to roll forward and after several bits at the line, scrum-half James Thorpe slices his way through to add extend the lead. De Jager added the extras.
Southgate then enjoyed a spell of possession of their own but were well marshalled by the awful conditions and Uxbridge defence. The third try for the hosts came when Thorpe took a quick penalty and Mark Coles delayed a pass to put debutant Adam Webster in under posts.
Uxbridge continued to defend and turn the screw in attack and after Jake Lamport made some good yards offloaded to put outside-centre McAndrew through under the posts to take a four try lead into half time.
Southgate came out in the second half much the stronger and with Jake Lamport sportingly changing sides made holes in the Uxbridge defence to score out wide. The conversion was missed.
As conditions took their toll, play began to break up and following a superb kick to the corner, a driving line-out was held up just short allowing man-of-the-match Mark Coles to break a couple tackles and drive his way over.
Southgate responded with a try of their own (missed conversion) before the hosts extended their with Moceica stretching his legs to get around the Southgate defence and kindly pass to Dan Tilyer to dot the ball down.
With the game in its closing stages, there was time for one more score and a superb penalty from McAndrew kicked to find the corner saw clean lineout, for the ball to be shipped out to McAndrew to score his second of the game. The subsequent conversion was successful and brought the final score to Uxbridge XV-41-Southgate-10.
The First XV return to action next week on Saturday 25 November against Finsbury Park (away, K.O-14:30) and the Second XV away to Whitton Lions (K.O- 14:30)
