Uxbridge toil in heat against well-drilled Mill Hill side
Despite a dogged showing, Uxbridge succumb to Mil Hill 55-19
Uxbridge made the trip to North London to take on regular foes Mill Hill on a hot afternoon knowing they would need to be at their best to take the game to the hosts.
The game kicked off in earnest, and from Uxbridge mistakes (and a missed collapsed scrum) Mill Hill raced into a two try lead.
This stirred the visitors, and for the next ten minutes spent much more time with ball in hand, winning penalties for ruck infringements and probing the Mill Hill line. A spell of broken play saw the ball find its way to fly-half Will Searle who danced his way through the Mill Hill defence to score under the posts. Searle then added the extras to get Bridge up and running.
The next 40 minutes either side of half-time was one to forget for Uxbridge as despite good play, mistakes crept in and allowed Mill Hill to capitalise as their pacey backs ran in several tries.
Undeterred, Bridge kept plugging away with powerful carries from Sean McAndrew, Kyle Buckingham and Sam Dillamore, and it was one such carry from Buckingham that released centre Simon Batts who found Dan Evans in space to smash his way over the line.
With the possibility of a bonus point on the line, Mill Hill added two more tries to their total, a and Bridge dug in and launched another attack on the Mill Hill Line, and after good work from Dan Evans and Isaac Williams who were superb all afternoon, Batts had the last word on the game as he wormed his way over the line to score. Mike King added the conversion to take the final score to 55-19.
In all, a gutsy performance but Uxbridge mistakes cost us against a good side. Next week, Uxbridge return to Gatting Way to take on Cuffley (kick-off 3PM) and there is no Second XV game.
