2012/13 Vale of Lune Club Captain, Andy Garnett, has already been showing his outstanding leadership qualities this season;
It is in an environment that many of you would not associate with Garny having watched his bruising performances on a rugby pitch. For the last month, Garny has been leading an army of Vale Senior players (and one footballing import/veteran) into battle in the Lancaster & Morecambe College Floodlit Football League...yes, FOOTBALL! Four games in and the “Vale of Loonies” are unbeaten and have been compared by some tournament officials as “on a par with Barcelona” and “a delight to watch”.
Loonie Highlights so far include their debut 5-2 victory and a 2-1 win against Carnforth Rangers FC who won the North Lancs Premier Division last season (so are basically the best football team in the area) after two late Noodle strikes. Loonie lowlight = Heskey putting a goal kick out for a corner (work that one out!). The Loonies style of play can best be described as effective and a mistimed tackle is never more than a minute away. The lads would like to thank Stotty for the fitness work he is doing with them in pre season but do request more shooting practice incorporated into the sessions.
Loonie Squad: James Hesketh (The Cat/Neville Southall), Powers (Fabien Barthez), Garny (Skipper, rock at the back), Dave Carter (Footballing veteran, still got it), Tom Carter (inherited Daves footballing genes), Oli Carter (unfortunately missed those genes), Hodds (an eye for goal as well as the try line), Wallbank (scored a screamer on debut), Curran (hope he gets new boots before Vale season), Noodles (goal scoring phenomenon, 7 in 4 games), Magic Morrison (twinkle-toes, solid debut last night).
If your interested in playing for The Loonies on a Monday night please contact Andy Garnett and he can organise a fitness test and ability test at your convenience.
According to the LMC web page, this is a 7-a-side league.
Little wonder the Loonies are doing so well playing nine against seven.
You can always rely on Dave Carter to fly the flag!!
Talking about flying flags. Do you know the Vale of Lune Club Flag was raised only once at home games last season ? Must have been good ground staff team on that day!!
