At 13:00 hours today Valley Knights kicked off their 1st every game in the Sheffield and District Junior football league ‘B’ Division and they didn’t look out of place, coming away with a 2-2 draw. Despite having to come from behind twice the visitors always looked like the better side and played the better football and had it not been for the brilliants of Wickersley’s keeper and the knights poor finishing in front of goal, the Knights could have easily won this game.
VK started the better of the two sides and probable had 90% of the ball for the opening 5 mins, carving out good chances down both wings but unfortunately not making there procession pay and it provide to be costly as on 19 minutes they fell behind to a simple goal. Wickersley where given too much time down the VK left and the results cross was not cleared by the defence following a weak punch form Heathcote in the nets. The ball fell to Wickersley’s number 10 and he simple put the ball low under Heathcote and into the open net.
If Heathcote was at fault for the poor punch he currently redeemed himself just minutes later making 2 great saves and keep the score at just 1-0. Then with 28 minutes on the clock the VK midfield finally put the ball out wide and in behind the Wickersley defence for Pattison to run on to. His pinpoint cross found Lycett making a later run unmarked and he couldn’t miss from 8 yards out.
After the break both teams started well but again it was Wickersley that made the break through and went ahead for the 2nd time in the game. So neat 1-2’s round the Knights book left a gap on the left and after beating 3 men a hard low shot into the bottom corner was all it took to restore the lead.
The Knights pushed but just couldn’t make all there possession and chances count so with a change of formation and personal they went for it. Now play 3 at the back the Knights started to work hard again sensing they could get back the goal. A quick throwing from Riley to Pattison and then another pinpoint cross to Slyvester gave him space and time to pick his spot and boy did he pick it right in the corner of the net as the VK team celebrated his finish.
With just 5 minutes left VK went all out for the win with a few good chances coming their way but as before they just couldn’t put the game to bed. Over all a good performance from our heroes in yellow and black but certainly thing they can work on. To be fair they really didn’t look out of place in the league today.
