Connor shines and earns himself a 6-week trial as Vauxhall's performance pushes Liverpool all the way despite a 4-0 defeat.

What an experience and for 50 minutes what a performance.

Vauxhall travelled to Liverpool Acacdemy to play the U12 development squad in a friendly fixture and did themselves proud with a terrific effort against a team of excellent players, including one of Vauxhall's very own in Toby.

Having to play the opening 20 minutes without Jarrod, (who was ably deputised for by Liam Jones making 1 excellent stop low down at the end of the period) meant that Vauxhall played with a degree of nervousness. Completely understandable when faced with the famous red shirts of Liverpool and the environment in which they were playing. However Vauxhall managed to give as good as they got for long periods of the game and could have taken the lead when Jordan's excellent pass found Liam, in the box after his well timed run had created the opening but his shot scrapped the crossbar. This was Vauxhall's best chance in a nervy 1st period.

The Liverpool boys were terrific themselves and played the game at a sharp pace and were excellent in their movement in possession of the ball and were quick to close Vauxhall down once they lost it. This combination of pace, 1 & 2 touch passing and movement created a number of opportunities that Vauxhall did well to defend, particularly Nick and Jacob who made some crucial interceptions. However a good crisp finish midway through the period gave Liverpool a lead they held until the end of the 1st 20 minute period.

The start of the 2nd 20 saw Vauxhall really come into the game and start to play the kind of football they have played all season. They got the ball down and moved it wide and created some good passing triangles. This began to breed confidence into Vauxhall and they started for the first time to exert some consistent pressure.

The move of the game from a Vauxhall perspective came when Tiddy, Liam and Steven combined brillantly to set Connor free. After receiving a clever ball from Tiddy, Liam neatly took the ball inside his opponent and played a sweet pass to Steven. He took 2 quick touches to beat his man then played a killer ball in behind the fullback. Connor raced onto it but the Liverpool keeper was equal to his final shot and managed to keep the score at 1-0.

Further good opportunities were created for Jordan, Connor and Joe, in a 10 minute spell when Vauxhall controlled the pace of the game and possession of the ball. Defensively Vauxhall looked more assured and denied Liverpool for the majority of the period the space they had enjoyed in the opening period. Even so there were a couple of scares particularly when Liverpool hit the post but at the whistle the 2nd period ended with Vauxhall still only 1-0 down.

The final period started with Liverpool getting back an element of the control they had enjoyed in the opening period. Despite this pressure a great run down the left by Joe did create one last opportunity which Jake, from a tight angle was unable to convert. There was no more scoring until the final 10 minutes when Liverpool having played really well grabbed 3 quick fire goals, all well taken and all giving Jarrod no chance as Vauxhall ran out of steam as the effort they had put in and the nervous energy they had expended began to take its toll.

With the absence of Toby at centre-back a number of players played out of their prefered position but all of them stepped up and demonstrated a positive can do attitude, particularly Ben, Tiddy and Sailesy. On reflection the boys right across the team were excellent despite playing against some top quality opposition and having to chase the ball for long periods they never gave in. This was embodied in particular by Sam and Robbie both of whom were tireless in their effort throughout.

The manner in which the boys represented the club was a credit to them, they played with heart and no shortage of skill throughout and can be really proud of their performance on the night.
