Victorians Ladies Club History

HISTORY OF VICTORIANS LADIES HOCKEY CLUB

VLHC was established in 1935 by a group of past pupils of Victoria College Belfast.

The school has close links with Strathearn, due to the fact that it used to be the prep school for Victoria. Shortly after its establishment, Victorians was formed – made up of past pupils from both these Belfast Grammar Schools.

By the 1950s the Club had 3 teams competing every week. The 1st XI had Inter-pro and International players, including our past Club President, Dr Moira McKelvey. Towards the end of the 1960s the Club’s membership expanded to include schoolgirls from Victoria and Strathearn. Organised mid-week training became a necessity to maintain the standard of play, which was now synonymous with Victorians. A selection committee was elected, as there was growing competition for places on the 1st XI. In 1977 the Club’s Pavilion was erected alongside the pitch at Victoria College. This was in memory of the Club’s long time President – Mrs Winifred Templeton, who was also President of Ireland.

In 1980 Victorians became an semi-open club, accepting initially only 5 guests as full members. The benefits were obvious through League & Cup successes and the Club soon became fully open club. Currently we have players from all over the province.

Victorians were the first Ulster club, in 1990, to take the innovative step of practising and playing their Senior League fixtures on an artificial surface at Olympia L.C. Today the whole Club trains at QUB on the water & play all matches on artificial surface at different venues around Belfast. The club also practise at Deramore.

From 1989 to the present day Victorians Youth Development Programme aims at developing the skills of schoolgirls to the level of ability needed for Representative & Senior Club Hockey. The mid 1990s identified the need to start even earlier. Mini-hockey started on Saturday mornings at Victoria College and caters for girls from P.3 to P.7.

The present day club as 2 Senior teams, 3 Junior teams, 1 Veterans team and Mini section.

Victorians is an established Senior Club in Ulster. Over the years the Club has continued to evolve and change with the times. We believe the future of hockey is with the youth of today, and we strive to provide a pathway to opportunity & success.
