I come to praise Nick, not to bury him

Nick McPherson, our Captain, has, I have learnt, decided to stand down as Captain. I want to pay my own personal tribute to a guy who has, in my humble opinion, been a marvellous Captain. He has always given 100 % on the field, and I hope I am not being rude in saying that not everything he has tried on the field has come off, but he has played with a conviction, with a passion and with pride in leading our Club.
He has been a good Club Captain , as well as being Captain on the field. He has organised work parties to do all those mundane little jobs that the first team have always been notoriously loth to do. He has encouraged the younger players to integrate with the more senior players, ad in fact, is proud that the average age of the 1st XV has plunged in the last season. He has not been afraid to play the younger players and whoever is Captain next will reap the rich benefits of Nick’s philosophy. He has barely missed a training session, and has supported of the Social events with equal enthusiasm. He has supported the Youth section , and I know for a fact that Justine has been immensely impressed with Nick’s involvement with the youngsters in both attending several Sunday sessions, or ensuring a senior player attends.
Nick may not have the history of this Club coursing through his veins in the same way some of us of a certain age, but I believe he has come to love the Club, to buy into our ethos, to ‘’get ‘’ us.
In my capacity of Press Officer, and general Club Bore, I have either played with or observed every Club Captain since 1970, and I will quite happily state that Nick has been one of our best Captains. I want to say ’’Thanks, Nick, for all that you have done, and I sincerely hope that in stepping down as Captain , that doesn’t mean you will lessen or diminish your commitment to the 1st XV and , indeed, the Club.
It has been an honour to have reported on your teams’ achievements for the last three years. It will be an honour for me to have a beer or two in the future. I hope, and trust, that the rest of Vigo RFC will join me in applauding and appreciating a terrific Captain
