VRFC vs Washington Renegades RFC
VRFC wins a close one against the Renegades.
The VA Men won their second game of the season against another tough playoff bound team in the Washington Renegades.
The Game started brightly for the VA Men, putting the Renegades under pressure and keeping them inside their own half for most of the opening 15 minutes. The pressure eventually paid off with a score for VA's right wing Jimmy Stevens, the conversion was successful by fly half James Fealey.
The game continued to be fairly even until a silly penalty from a VA scrum gave the Renegades the chance to kick for touch deep inside the VA half. From the resulting line and few drives from the Renegades forwards VA found them selves under a little pressure and a missed tackle allowed a runner to get close to the VA line, VA were able to stop the rummer with some last ditch tackling but the Renegades runner was able to offload in the tackle for a team mate and for them to score a good team try! but a pretty weak try from VA's perspective. The Renegades made the successful conversion and the rest of the first half played out pretty even and at half time the score was tied 7-7.
The second half saw VA come out in a different mood, it was almost like the VA of old. VA soaked up any pressure that the renegades applied and marched them back towards their own try line, spending a good 30 minutes of the second half inside the Renegades 40. The VA line out began to function and VA were able to drive off of the line out and place pressure on the Renegades line. A few phases took place with VA wasting some golden opportunities to score and coming up just short of the Renegades line, eventually the pressure paid off, good communication between the half backs allowing fly half James Fealey to cross the try line untouched for VA's second try, this time Fealey's radar was off and the conversion was missed. 12-7 to VA. VA would place more pressure on the Renegades, with a combination of good defense and tough tackling from the Renegades along with some wrong options taken by VA, the score stayed the same. There was one last chance for the Renegades as time expired, VA made the mistake of trying to take time off the clock to end the game and made a mistake and gave possession to the Renegades deep inside their half. The Renegades ran the ball and made it to half way and VA gave away a penalty, the Renegades took the penalty quickly with their fly half making a line break only to be tackled by VA's full back on the 22, with VA scrambling on defense, the referee deemed that the Renegades fly half took too long in playing the ball after being tackled and a penalty was awarded to VA. VA breathed a sigh of re-leaf and fly half James Fealey kicked the ball into touch and the game was over with VA being victorious 12-7 over a tough Washington Renegades team.
There were outstanding performances from VA in a number of positions, Scrum Half Todd Applebaum controlled the forwards well and put in a great performance, VA also had a large number of players returning from injury and all of them put in great efforts, the performance of the day has to go to the VA back row with Alex Tisch playing in his first ever game of rugby not looking out of place, Ryan Pruitt returning from injury to add his experience around the field but the best performance and man of the Match deservedly going to Christian Wakeman who played out of position.
