VRFC vs. UVA
2:00 PM, Saturday, March 20th, 2010
Charlottesville, VA
Playing against the University of Virginia at Mad Bowl in their first match of the spring season, the Virginia Rugby Football Club showed a lot of rust but also flashes of their old form. The team dominated significant portions of the match, but ultimately were undone by a few costly mistakes in a 20-25 loss.
VRFC started strongly, putting UVA on the defensive early on. In the eighth minute, UVA was penalized for collapsing a maul, allowing fly half James Fealey to open the scoring with a successful penalty kick from 22 meters out. Despite dominating stretches of the first half, VRFC was unable to score any more points before the break. 22 minutes into the match, UVA leveled the score with a penalty of their own. Near the end of the half, UVA scored the first try of the match on a counterattack of a VRFC clearance. The successful conversion brought the half-time score to 3-10.
UVA opened the second half with another penalty to give them a ten point lead. VRFC struck back only minutes later when they were awarded a lineout deep in UVA territory. The forwards attacked for a number of phases, and eventually eight man Marc Breton touched down for the try. Fealey's conversion, which bounced in off of one of the uprights, brought the score to 10-13.
In the 54th minute, UVA was on the receiving end of a bit of good luck. A VRFC lineout deep in their own end was knocked back into the try zone. A lucky series of bounces found the ball in the hands of a UVA player, who touched down for the easy try and a 10-18 lead. Once again, VRFC struck back quickly. After pushing back a UVA scrum, VRFC was awarded a scrum of their own 10 meters away from the UVA goal line. Eight man Jason Gaviria picked up the ball from the back of the scrum and broke a number of tackles to score a solo try and bring VRFC within three points.
VRFC looked poised to finally retake the lead in the 67th minute. Attacking inside the UVA 22, the ball was swung out wide to the backs. Unfortunately, a dropped pass was picked up by a UVA wing, who raced the length of the pitch to score untouched under the posts. The easy conversion brought UVA 10 points clear at 15-25. VRFC continued to attack furiously in the closing minutes of the match, even after a yellow card reduced them to 14 men. With three minutes to play, the ball once again made its way to Gaviria, who beat four UVA defenders to score his second try. The score brought VRFC within a try at 20-25. VRFC kept up its frantic attack for the remainder of the match, but the final whistle blew before they could score again.
