VRFC vs. Washington Renegades
1:00 PM, Saturday, April 10th, 2010
Washington, D.C.
Playing on the (American) football pitch at Cardozo High School in Washington, D.C, Virginia overcame a strong Washington Renegades side to take home a 21-14 victory. A number of Virginia players also competed in a second match, which pitted the Renegades against the Alexandria Roosters.
Virginia came out attacking and almost scored in the first few minutes of the match. Center Evan Davis broke through the Washington defense but was dragged out of bounds with a horse-collar tackle just short of the goal line. Davis got his revenge only minutes later. Virginia was awarded a scrum deep in Washington territory, and the ball made its way through the hands of scrum half Todd Applebaum, fly half James Fealey, and finally to Davis, who broke through multiple tackles to score the try. Fealey's conversion gave Virginia an early 7-0 lead. Washington struck back in the 16th minute with a converted try of their own to level the score. Only three minutes later, Virginia regained the lead. With the ball deep in Washington's half, wing Kerry Davis blocked an attempted clearance back into Washington's try zone. Fullback and man-of-the-match Matt Staples chased the loose ball, and was awarded a penalty try after being impeded by a Washington defender (Staples still managed to ground the ball first). Another successful conversion by Fealey gave Virginia a 14-7 lead, which they preserved until half-time.
Virginia came out on the offensive again to start the second half. In the 50th minute, Davis broke through the defensive line and found Staples, who chipped the ball into the Washington 22. The loose ball was recovered by a Washington player, but Virginia's swarming defense immediately stole the ball back. The ball was fed to Jason Gaviria, who crashed through a number of defenders for a try. Fealey's kicking remained on target, and Virginia's lead grew to 21-7. In the 65th minute, a Washington center was sent to the sin bin for repeatedly making late tackles. With the man advantage, Virginia controlled the next ten minutes and seemed content to simply hold onto its lead. Once back at full strength, the frantic Washington side managed to score one consolation try in the final minutes of match, bringing the final score to Virginia 21, Washington 14.
