VRFC vs. Old Gaelic
MARFU Finals
1:00 PM, Sunday, May 2nd, 2010
Roanoke, VA
Virginia faced off against the Old Gaelic Rugby Football Club of Mechanicsburg, PA for the MARFU Division III championship. Old Gaelic was riding high after a 37-0 shutout of Lehigh Valley in the semi-finals. Virginia quickly brought them back down to earth, controlling the match from the opening whistle. A 50-10 victory gave Virginia their first MARFU championship and capped a dominating run through the playoffs in which Virginia outscored their three opponents 171-39 and twelve different players scored a total of 25 tries. The win makes Virginia the MARFU #1 seed heading into the round of sixteen of the USA Rugby national championship. Their next match is against Hilton Head, the #1 seed from the South, on May 22nd in Columbia, SC.
Virginia nearly scored in the third minute when a maul was driven into the Old Gaelic try zone, but center Sean Mackintosh's attempt to down the ball was held up by the Old Gaelic defense. Virginia could not be kept off the board for long, however. Only two minutes later, a Virginia scrum five meters from the Old Gaelic goal line turned into points when scrum half Matt Staples found flanker Matt Pawlowicz crashing through the defense. The unconverted try gave Virginia an early 5-0 lead.
Virginia kept up its relentless attack, with a kick almost downed by fly half Evan Davis and a handful of near tries out on the wings over the next twenty minutes. They finally got back on the board in the 26th minute when an Old Gaelic scrum on their own 22 was stolen by the Virginia pack. Staples fed Davis, who found wing Kerry Griggs out wide. After beating his defender, Griggs passed back inside to Davis, who broke free to score. Davis converted his own try to put Virginia up 12-0. Virginia scored once more before the half on another play that turned defense into offense. Davis kicked the ball into the Old Gaelic half, where it was collected by an opposing wing. Davis gave chase and immediately stole the ball back, offloading in a tackle to Mackintosh. Mackintosh found lock Aaron Franke, who passed to Staples. Staples broke two tackles and dove through a third to score an outstanding try. Davis converted to bring Virginia's half-time lead to 19-0.
Virginia maintained its dominance in the second half. In the 55th minute, Davis once again nearly downed a kick in the Old Gaelic try zone. Immediately after, eight man Anthony "Mongo" Montgomery picked the ball up from the back of a Virginia scrum five meters from the Old Gaelic goal line and beat two would-be tacklers for a solo try, extending Virginia's lead to 24-0. Virginia benefited from another solitary effort in the 64th minute. Fullback Lucien Dimani returned a kick deep into Old Gaelic territory, where he was tackled near the touch line. Dimani was not held, however, and he proceeded to get up and beat the last defender for a try, giving Virginia a 29-0 lead. Virginia's string of solo tries continued in the 69th minute, when scrum half Todd Applebaum passed to Davis from a scrum deep in Virginia territory. Davis took off with the ball, running nearly the length of the pitch and beating a number of defenders to score under the posts. Davis converted his own try to put Virginia up 36-0.
With the match clearly out of reach, Old Gaelic finally ended the shutout on the ensuing kickoff. A Virginia clearance was blocked, and an Old Gaelic player managed to touch down in the corner. The unconverted try brought the score to 36-5. Virginia immediately countered on the next kickoff. Old Gaelic failed to control the kick, and wing Ken Duvall caught the ball in stride and raced off to score under the posts. Davis converted again to give Virginia a 43-5 lead. The two sides continued to trade points, as Old Gaelic scored an unconverted try in the 75th minute from a quick tap penalty five meters from the Virginia goal line. Virginia struck last, however, after the ensuing kickoff did not travel ten meters and Old Gaelic alarmingly elected for a scrum at midfield. The Virginia pack drove Old Gaelic back and the lost ball was kicked forward by Applebaum, who collected his own kick off of the bounce and strolled in for the last try of the match. Davis converted to bring the final score to 50-10. The final whistle set off a wild celebration as Virginia earned its first ever MARFU championship.
