VRFC vs. Hilton Head
National Round of 16
10:00 AM, Saturday, May 22nd, 2010
Columbia, SC
Virginia traveled to Columbia, SC to face the South region champions, Hilton Head, in the national round of 16. After a tentative opening five minutes, Virginia took over the match, eventually winning 20-5. Virginia advances to face Fox Valley from the Midwest region for a spot in the final four.
Virginia started the match slowly, with Hilton Head controlling play for much of the first five minutes. After the opening minutes, however, the momentum quickly swung in Virginia's favor. Virginia had a number of scoring opportunites in the early going, but did not score their first points until about twenty minutes into the match, after Virginia was awarded a penalty on Hilton Head's 22. Hilton Head failed to retreat ten meters, resulting in another Virginia penalty. Fly half James Fealey quickly swung the ball out wide to lock Aaron Franke, who was matched up one-on-one with a wing. Franke ran over the wing to open the scoring and put Virginia up 5-0. Throughout the rest of the half, Virginia kept the ball pinned in the Hilton Head half of the field, but were unable to capitalize on the numerous opportunities.
Ten minutes into the second half, Virginia finally turned their defensive pressure into more points. Hilton Head cleared the ball from their own goal line, and fullback Gary Larimer immediately counterattacked, linking up with center Evan Davis. Davis chipped the ball over the defensive line into Hilton Head's try zone, where wing Shawn Johnson dove on the ball for the try and a 10-0 lead. In the 60th minute, Hilton Head ended the shutout by scoring an unconverted try of its own to bring the score to 10-5.
Despite the close score line, Virginia continued to dominate the match. Their persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute. Starting deep in Virginia territory, Larimer broke down the sideline for what appeared to be a try. Unfortunately, Larimer was ruled to have stepped into touch a few meters before scoring. On the resulting lineout, Hilton Head fed the ball to one of their backs, and flanker Michael Bischoff forced him out the back of the try zone to earn Virginia a five meter scrum. Scrum half Matt Staples found Fealey, who swung the ball out wide through Davis to Larimer. Larimer outraced the Hilton Head defense to the corner to score and put Virginia up 15-5.
A few minutes before the end of the match, Virginia once again appeared to score a try, only to have it called back. On a scrum five meters from the Hilton Head goal line, eight man Anthony Montgomery rolled over a tackler to touch the ball down just past the line, but the referee ruled that he had been stopped short. Virginia scored on the resulting scrum, however, with Fealey finding Davis wide to dive in for a try. The unconverted try brought the final score to 20-5, earning Virginia a spot in the national quarterfinals.
