VRFC vs. Fox Valley
National Quarterfinals
1:00 PM, Sunday, May 23rd, 2010
Columbia, SC
After their victory in the round of sixteen, Virginia advanced to face the Fox Valley Maoris from St. Charles, Illinois. Virginia scored early and often to take a 31-5 lead at the break. The team came out flat to start the second half, but quickly battled back to retake control of the match and eventually earn a 48-12 victory. The win gives Virginia a berth in the final four, which will be contested June 5th and 6th in Glendale, Colorado. Virginia will face the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) of San Diego, California to compete for a spot in the national championship game.
The opening minutes of the match were fairly even. Fox Valley had the first good scoring opportunity, when a blocked Virginia kick was nearly downed in the try zone, but fortunately the ball bounced into touch. After that early scare, Virginia began to dominate the match. In particular, Fox Valley had no answer for Virginia's forwards on lineouts. In the sixth minute, a Virginia lineout on Fox Valley's 22 was collected by eight man Marc Breton and driven forward by the Virginia pack. The ball was fed to center Evan Davis, who found wing Matt Staples out wide. Staples cut inside and dove through a tackle to get Virginia on the board. Fly half James Fealey's conversion went directly over the upright, leaving Virginia's lead at 5-0.
A few minutes later, a Virginia lineout ten meters from Fox Valley's goal line was once again caught by Breton and driven by the Virginia forwards. Scrum half Todd Applebaum extracted the ball from the maul and dove in uncontested for a try. Fealey's conversion put Virginia up 12-0. Virginia continued to capitalize on lineouts, scoring another try in the 16th minute. Breton once again collected a lineout ten meters from the Fox Valley goal line and the forwards drove a maul. The ball made its way to Fealey and then to Staples, who chipped into the corner of the try zone. Fullback Gary Larimer caught the kick on the bounce and touched down for a try. Another successful conversion by Fealey increased Virginia's lead to 19-0.
Fox Valley got on the board midway through the first half with an unconverted try. Virginia struck back on another lineout about ten minutes later. Virginia had possession deep in Fox Valley's half, but the ball was stolen from a ruck. Applebaum forced the ball carrier into touch, and Virginia immediately threw the ball in. The Virginia backs swung the ball to the opposite touch line, where Larimer ran in for an easy try and a 24-5 lead. Virginia scored one more time at the very end of the half on yet another lineout. With Virginia attacking, Davis was hit late after kicking the ball, giving Virginia a penalty deep in Fox Valley territory. Given Fox Valley's inability to contend on lineouts, Virginia once again decided to kick for touch. As expected, Breton caught the lineout, and Virginia mauled forward to the Fox Valley goal line. Lock Damien Blanchon peeled off and dove in for a try. Fealey's conversion brought Virginia's half-time lead to 31-5.
Perhaps due to the large lead, Virginia looked complacent to start the second half. After the opening kickoff and a number of kicks back and forth, Virginia missed multiple tackles and allowed the Fox Valley fullback to score. The converted try brought the score to 31-12. Fox Valley had a few more scoring opportunities over the next five minutes. Twice a loose ball in the Virginia try zone was grounded by a Virginia player moments before a Fox Valley player could pounce on it.
Virginia got back on track in the 50th minute. Fealey sent a kick deep into Fox Valley's half. Hooker Luis Lucas and lock Aaron Franke gave chase and tackled the isolated Fox Valley player, who was forced to hang onto the ball and concede a penalty. Virginia kicked for touch, and the lineout went over the top to flanker Michael Bischoff. After forming a maul and driving forward, the ball was sent through the backs to wing Shawn Johnson, who outraced the defense to the corner and dove for a try. Another conversion by Fealey brought Virginia's lead to 38-12.
Virginia kept up the intensity for the remainder of the match. With about ten minutes left, flanker Jason Gaviria attacked the defense and drew in five defenders. A maul formed and was driven to within five meters of the Fox Valley goal line. Eventually Virginia was awarded a scrum due to a Fox Valley infringement. Virginia attacked over multiple phases, with eight man Anthony Montgomery and flanker Tim Davis both getting tackled just short of the goal line. Applebaum retrieved the ball from the final ruck and dove for his second try of the match. Virginia scored one final time on the final play of the match. Evan Davis sent a long, bouncing kick into touch deep in Fox Valley territory. After the ensuing lineout, the ball was stolen by Virginia, and Tim Davis combined with Franke to feed lock Matt Burkett for a try and a 48-12 lead. The final whistle set off a raucous celebration as Virginia earned a spot in the final four and a shot at the national championship match.
