VRFC vs. OMBAC
National Semifinals
11:00 AM, Saturday, June 5th, 2010
Glendale, CO
Playing at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado for a spot in the national championship game, Virginia put up a strong fight against a very impressive side from Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC). Ultimately, however, OMBAC proved to be too much for Virginia to handle in a 12-29 loss. OMBAC moves on to face the St. Louis Royals in a battle for the national title, while Virginia will compete for third place against Cedar Rapids.
The opening minutes of the match were fairly even, with the two teams battling back and forth. OMBAC got on the board first in the sixth minute by capitalizing on a Virginia mistake. OMBAC chipped deep into Virginia territory, where wing Ken Duvall won possession of the bouncing ball but was immediately tackled. Although Virginia controlled the ruck, an errant pass led to a loose ball in the Virginia try zone. OMBAC dove on the ball for a try, and with a successful conversion jumped out to an early seven point lead. Midway through the first half, OMBAC once again took advantage of a Virginia mistake. A Virginia kick near midfield was blocked and collected by OMBAC, who chipped the ball over the Virginia defense. The ball bounced off a number of Virginia players before it was collected again by OMBAC and touched down for another try. A missed conversion left OMBAC up by 12.
In the 31st minute, OMBAC was awarded a scrum five meters from the Virginia try line. After controlling the scrum and attacking over a number of phases, OMBAC was finally able to break the Virginia defensive line to score. Another missed conversion left OMBAC's lead at 17. On the ensuing kickoff, Virginia suffered another setback when flanker Jason Gaviria was penalized for hands in the ruck for the first time in the match and was immediately yellow carded. Despite the one man disadvantage, some of Virginia's best scoring opportunities of the half came in the final minutes. Regardless, Virginia entered half-time with zero points on the board.
Virginia appeared to get back in the match at the beginning of the second half. Only four minutes in, an OMBAC kick near midfield was blocked by fullback Lucien Dimani. Dimani collected the loose ball and outraced the defense for a try. Fly half James Fealey converted to put Virginia within ten at 7-17. Virginia's excitement was short-lived, however, as OMBAC scored once again only seven minutes later. A Virginia scrum five meters from their own goal line was mauled forward, only to be stolen and touched down for an easy try. The conversion brought OMBAC's lead to 7-24.
Despite the large deficit, Virginia continued to fight. In the 62nd minute, Virginia defended ferociously to keep OMBAC pinned inside their own 22. Eventually OMBAC attempted a kick, which was blocked by scrum half Todd Applebaum. The ball was swung out wide to fullback Gary Larimer, who ran to the corner to score untouched. Even after a missed conversion by center Evan Davis, Virginia was within two tries at 12-24. Virginia continued to attack relentlessly, earning a few more scoring opportunities that unfortunately they were unable to capitalize on. Near the end of the match, OMBAC scored one final time after stealing a Virginia lineout deep in Virginia territory. Although Virginia was able to keep OMBAC out of the try zone for multiple phases, eventually OMBAC broke through, diving in for the final try of the match. The missed kick left the score at 12-29. The final whistle came shortly after and ended Virginia's hopes of bringing home a national championship. Virginia still has one match left, against Cedar Rapids for third place, and hopes to end the season with a victory.
