Roanoke, VA

In a match hosted by the Roanoke Rugby Football Club, Virginia dominated Johnson City with a 59-5 victory. The men from Tennessee came to the match with less than a full side but were able to recruit a number of players from the host team. Virginia, missing all but one of its props, also benefited from the addition of a Roanoke player.

Virginia set the tone early with some hard running and rucking from their forwards. The pack's dominance throughout the match opened up the game for the backs. In the eighth minute, wing Ken Duvall got on the end of a chain of passes and touched down for the opening score. Six minutes later, Virginia struck again when center Shawn Johnson took a switch from fly half Evan Davis and darted through the Johnson City line to score. Davis converted to give Virginia a 12-0 lead. In the 19th minute, scrum half and man of the match Todd Applebaum picked the ball out of a ruck and kept it himself to score the first of his three tries. Davis converted again to bring the score to 19-0.

In the 26th minute, Davis scored a try of his own and successfuly converted. Four minutes later, Applebaum got his second try of the day after chasing down a kick. Davis' conversion gave Virginia a 33-0 lead. Near the end of the half, Johnson City got on the board with a well-earned try after a number of offensive phases. The failed conversion left the half-time score at 33-5.

Virginia struck quickly in the second half. After moving out to center, Davis scored his second try of the match in the 43rd minute off of a pass from Applebaum at the fly half position. His conversion increased the Virginia lead to 40-5. Seven minutes later, Duvall scored his second try on a 60 meter run. Davis successfully converted once again.

In the 67th minute, Applebaum completed his hat trick with an unconverted try that began with a quick lineout from scrum half Tracy Burge. Center Johnny McNulty rounded out the scoring with a 71st minute try that started from a lineout. Davis' seventh conversion brought the final score to 59-5.
