VRFC vs. Virginia Beach
1:00 PM, Saturday, September 12th, 2009
Charlottesville, VA
The Virginia Rugby Football Club opened its 2009 fall season with a convincing 20-6 win over the visiting Virginia Beach Falcons. The match was the first played on their new pitch at the Charlottesville VFW.
Virginia dominated the first twenty minutes of the match, consistently keeping the ball in the Falcons' defensive half. Their efforts were rewarded with three penalty kick opportunities in the first twelve minutes. Fly half James Fealey found his form on the third kick, giving Virginia an early 3-0 lead. In the 16th minute, a Falcons scrum deep in their own half resulted in a clearance kick fielded by wing Kerry Griggs, who fed the ball to fullback Gary Larimer. Larimer's chip was recovered by the Falcons near their own goal line, but a quick tackle by Griggs allowed flanker Matt Pawlowicz to steal the ball and touch down in the corner. The missed conversion left Virginia with an 8-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons were immediately awarded a penalty. The successful kick brought the score to 8-3 and appeared to give the visitors momentum, as the next ten minutes were fairly even. Virginia began to reassert itself near the end of the half. In the 36th minute, center Johnny McNulty made a break through the Falcons defensive line. The ball made its way to Fealey, who had it knocked loose by a tackle as he went to ground in the try zone. Virginia had another near miss on the final play of the half when a scrum five meters from the Falcons' goal line resulted in a drop-kick opportunity for Fealey. The missed kick left the half-time score at 8-3.
Virginia started the second half strongly, keeping the ball inside the Falcons' 22 for the first ten minutes. Despite their efforts, however, they were unable to convert their advantage into points. In the 43rd minute, a Fealey penalty kick was unsuccessful from 30 meters out. In the 46th minute, Virginia was awarded a lineout 10 meters from the Falcons goal line and drove a maul into the try zone. Unfortunately, the ball was held up and Virginia came away scoreless.
In the 57th minute, Virginia drove another maul deep into Falcons territory. The ball was fed back to Fealey, whose chip was recovered by the Falcons in their try zone. The resulting clearance was caught by Larimer, who attacked the defense with a chip of his own. Larimer recovered the ball after a fortuitous bounce and scored untouched between the posts. Fealey's conversion gave Virginia a 15-3 lead.
Virginia continued to wear down the Falcons throughout the rest of the match. In the 71st minute, the Falcons were awarded a lineout 10 meters from their own goal line. Virginia stole the lineout and drove a maul close to the try zone. The ball was recycled out to the backs, where center Evan Davis took advantage of an overload to break through the defense and feed Larimer, who scored outside. The unconverted try gave Virginia a 20-3 lead. Five minutes from the end of the match, the Falcons scored some consolation points on a drop goal from 15 meters. The kick brought the final score to 20-6.

Virginia's momentum at the end of the A-side game carried over into the B-side match. In the 10th minute, the ball made its way through the backs to wing Jason Yang, who was tackled around the neck as he dove for the line. A penalty try was awarded, and the successful conversion gave Virginia a 7-0 lead. The Falcons nearly leveled the score at the end of the first half, but flanker Michael Bischoff made a try-saving tackle to preserve the lead.
Virginia opened the second half with a bang. Two minutes in, fly half Michael Fealey broke through the defensive line and fed the ball to center Matt Solerno for an unconverted try. Only five minutes later, the ball made its way to eight man Anthony "Mongo" Montgomery, who bowled his way through multiple defenders for another try. James Fealey's conversion brought the Virginia lead to 19-0. Less than ten minutes later, Virginia struck again as flanker Matt MacDonald scored a try under the posts. Michael Fealey's conversion gave Virginia a 26-0 lead. The Falcons managed to get on the board near the end of the match with an unconverted try that brought the final score to 26-5.
