VRFC vs. Blackwater
1:00 PM, Saturday, October 3rd, 2009
Charlottesville, VA
The Virginia Rugby Football Club shut out the visiting Blackwater Rugby Football Club to record its third straight victory and remain undefeated.
Virginia dominated the match from the start, with the ball rarely leaving Blackwater's defensive half of the field. However, after scoring on a penalty kick from fly half Evan Davis in the 10th minute, Virginia was held scoreless for the next 25 minutes. Virginia's best early scoring opportunity came in the 23rd minute when they drove a maul into the try zone, but the ball was held up.
Virginia finally got on track in the 35th minute, thanks to great field position after a penalty kick from Davis found touch five meters from the Blackwater try line. After a successful lineout, the forwards drove a maul over the try line and flanker Michael Bischoff touched down for the first try of the match. Davis converted to give Virginia a 10-0 lead at halftime.
Virginia maintained their dominance in the second half, repeatedly keeping the ball close to the Blackwater try line. They were rewarded with a penalty in the 52nd minute, and the kick from Davis sailed through the uprights to give Virginia a 13-0 lead. They extended their lead a few minutes later when center James Fealey took a quick tap on a penalty close to the try line and beat three defenders for the score. The unconverted try brought the Virginia lead to 18-0.
In the 60th minute, Virginia was awarded a scrum deep in Blackwater territory. Scrum half Tracy Burge fed the ball to Davis, who set up Fealey to score untouched between the posts. Davis converted to extend the Virginia lead to 25-0. In the 67th minute, Davis received the ball after a lineout and reversed field, feeding the ball to wing Ken Duvall. After breaking a number of tackles, Duvall chipped the ball deep into Blackwater territory. Blackwater recovered but were quickly outnumbered, allowing Virginia to steal the ball. After a series of quick passes, wing Kerry Griggs dove for the corner and touched down for the try. Davis converted again, bringing the Virginia lead to 32-0.
Virginia closed out the scoring a few minutes from full time. After a scrum 10 meters from the Blackwater goal line, the ball was fed to scrum half Shawn Johnson, who attacked the corner and dove for another try. The conversion by Davis brought the final score to 39-0.
