DOM Hawkey scored five tries as Wadebridge Camels continued their march up the Tribute Western Counties West table with a ruthless 17-try demolition of short-handed St Ives.
The Hakes turned up at Molesworth Field with only 14 players, and by the second half that number had fallen to 11 due to injuries.
The referee eventually called a halt to proceedings 10 minutes early, after Camels had passed the 100-point mark.
“St Ives told us before the game that they only had 14, but myself and Matt Bailey (backs coach) kept it from the players because we didn’t want them to go out there thinking it was going to be easy,” said Camels head coach Mike Rawlings.
“Then, within about 20 minutes, they had gone down to 13, and then in the second half they were reduced to 11.
“Our boys did play exceptionally well, but there wasn’t really any competition, which was unfortunate, but it was a great result.”
Rawlings said Camels had been put in a difficult position by a request from the visiting coaching staff to halt the game early. While they did not want to humiliate them, they were keen to improve their points difference after two hefty defeats earlier in the season.
“Fair play to St Ives, they really dug in, but credit to our players as well, they could have started to mess around, but they stuck to their game and ran in the tries and took it seriously,” said Rawlings.
“Dom had a tremendous game. He had a bit more confidence than in previous weeks and was backing himself to go on the outside and pin his ears back and go for it.
“Jake Woodward, who has been playing for the Cornwall Under-20s, came in and it was a good game in which to introduce him to men’s rugby, and he had a stormer and really looked the part.
“It will be good to see what he is like against more organised opposition in a tougher game.”
That is what Camels will certainly face on Saturday when they travel to fifth-placed Devonport Services (2.15pm) in one of two matches before Christmas that Rawlings is eager to win, the other being at home to third-spot Kingsbridge.
“Potentially if we have a good second half of the season we could still be in the promotion shake-up, so these two matches are must-win games for us really,” he said.
Prop Jack Scott grabbed a hat-trick of tries against St Ives, while the rest came from Will Pengelly (2), Jake Woodward (2), Sean Johns (2), Dan Briskham, Matt Ballard and Rhys Bright. James Grubb slotted five conversions in each half for a personal 20-point haul.
The Hakes’ points came from a drop goal by fly-half Jamie Prisk soon after Camels’ first try, while he also converted a touchdown from lock Sam Heath in the second half.
