Camels started the game well, chasing the kick-off, winning a quick turnover, and pinning Hayle in their own 22. After sustained pressure, quick ruck ball made it's way to BillyT who forced his way over from 10m out - carrying half the Hayle pack on his back - for the first try. The early score gave the whole team confidence, and with the pack producing quick ball, HarryP digging it out quickly and Jack distributing quickly and intelligently, Camels outside strike runners - Ethan and Thomas - ran riot, adding three more tries between them before half time. It could have been more, but occasional over-eagerness and over-ambition saw a lot of knock-ons - more time was spent setting up scrums than with the ball in play.
The second half saw more of the same. Ethan and Thomas both completed their hat-tricks, there were well deserved tries for the selfless Rhys and the hard-working Cory, the returning Big Harry scored a fine try with the ref unsighted, and Jordan was unlucky that an errant pass denied him a first try with the very last play. Amongst all the tries, though, a moment stands out - when Hayle got some rare possession and worked a one-on-one on the right, Tristan - fresh off the bench and the smallest man on the field - made a perfect open-field tackle, drove his man backwards and won a turnover. A moment that summed up the game.
Man of the Match, chosen by Hayle's coaches, had several contenders but went to Thomas.
Camels should enjoy the win, but not for long - there are some far harder games coming up.
Thanks to Hayle for their hospitality.
