A special charity event was held to help raise cash for a stairlift for Brian Chapman, a former player and lifetime member who is presently confined to a wheelchair after suffering a stroke.
The cash will be used to help pay for the installation of a stairlift in his Trevanson Road home.
The highlight of the day was a match between Wadebridge XI (over-35s) playing against Plymouth Argyle Legends which resulted in Argyle winning 3-2.
Wadebridge Football Club chairman Steve Cudmore said:
"It was fantastic to see so many old faces come back for a reunion and to see Brian. It was lots of hard work but worth every minute to see how happy Brian was. We cannot thank everyone enough."
"The money raised is still being counted but we hope it will be in four figures and anticipated there will be enough for the stairlift."
Mr Chapman, 70, made his debut at Wadebridge Town Football Club in his teens. Over the years he played for many local clubs including St Columb Minor, Bodmin, St Dennis and Bugle. Being top of his game he even played for Cornwall but as a Wadebridge boy he returned to his town team. He played left wing and centre back. He was described by other players as "a rottweiler on the pitch".
Mr Chapman loved the game so much that he continued playing in his mid-50s despite recovering from a heart attack. Over the past 11 years Mr Chapman has had two heart attacks and three strokes, the most recent in July this year.
He was in hospital until September and doctors told his wife Jenny, 67, that he might never walk or eat for himself again.
She said:
"We are so overwhelmed by the generosity of local people. It was fantastic and Brian really enjoyed himself. Special thanks to Alec Brenton, Steve and Barry Cudmore and to everyone who came along and supported the event. I had one man stop me in the street and give me £100 towards the stairlift. The family cannot thank people enough. A stairlift would help us so much and will hopefully be fitted soon."
