WAIKIWI RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB (Inc.) 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016
Welcome to the 2016 Annual Report. This season started very positively, with great player numbers showing up early and quality coaches in Derek and Scott keen to go. A lot of work went into securing jersey sponsors, and we welcomed a new major sponsor – ALL LAY CARPETS – to Waikiwi, as well as retaining the outstanding support from our long term ones. Andrews Electrical came on board and sponsored the shorts. Thanks heaps and welcome to these new sponsors and to those who have been with Waikiwi for some time.

Derek and Johnny will write about the rugby, but from my perspective doubling up as team manager, from starting on such a positive it was hugely disappointing and frustrating to watch the injury toll go through the roof and watch the results nose dive. It was very tough on everybody, but a huge thanks to the guys that dug in and stuck with it. To quote Mr Manson, “I’ve never had so much fun losing!”

The A-Team has always been extremely good at supporting the club at after match functions, with duty rosters introduced this year it was good to get a hand on clean up. The guys helped get meals for visiting teams, do the washing up and sell raffles. As our injury toll went up, many had to double up or more so thanks team, it is from you guys that the future of Waikiwi has got to come from. It was great to get to know the youngsters from last year’s U18s (and some oldies), we just need a few more to turn up next year. The team also organised a re-invented Miss Waikiwi “Beauty” Pageant. This was an outstanding success. The “girls” really took on the challenge and made a great night of it, although the censors might have had a field day! Thank to Kiel for pushing it through and all involved.

This year we have been home to the Waikiwi Country Music Club, they get together once a month, and the odd Sunday, for open mic. Although it hasn’t reached the status it was hoped, they do get some good numbers and some good performances (and some less so), I am waiting for Tommo to say he is singing and I am there. So if you feel like a bit of a YEE HA or a sing along, git on down thar!

The jobs that need done around the club are piling up again, so hopefully in the New Year we will have a few working bees, so please come on down and help out.

Another challenge we face as a club is greater requirements we face to comply with council and licencing regulations. The bar managers licence is ridiculous but we cannot run without it, thanks to Stokey, Mark and Cowboy for sticking to this. As for our outgoing president Paul McEntyre, thanks again Stokey for the last 25 years, and your continued input to Waikiwi. Remember LIFE means life.

To Johnny The Rock Hunter, putting your body on the line for the team during another difficult year really proved true, with the bruises to prove it. The Rock is nearly always at the club before me to get the flags out and grounds set up, while trying to scramble a team together, Ta mate.

Thanks to Daniel/Otis for once again filling the Club Captain role, and being after match speaker. Huge thanks as usual to Noeline, whose job description won’t fit on this page. To Lemmy and Barney for keeping the bar running seamlessly. To Richey for looking after our computer type stuff and getting the word out. To all those who chip in during the year, thank you, every little bit helps.

Thanks and well done to Mark Dempsey for stepping into the role of schoolboy conveyor, made even more difficult trying to fill the void left by Tommo! Good work Mark.

Congratulations to all the award recipients at our end of year trophy night. While it was a low key event, we still managed an enjoyable evening, thanks to all who came along.

Once again, a huge shout out to all our sponsors as listed later, I would love to see you all at Waikiwi in 2017. To all have a great summer, Christmas and New Year.

Keep it RED n BLACK

Coach Report Senior A.

This year was a long hard fought campaign. It started with much promise, but soon developed into a weekly struggle just to field a team. The start of the season was a dream for Scotty and I. Strong player numbers, good preseason training and with it being our second year with this squad, a much better understanding of the guys. The initial games saw the team delivering strong performances and we played some great footy. As a result we achieved 2 wins in the first 2 games against DLS and Waikaka.

However, the following few weeks would be the first indication of what lay ahead, with heavy losses to eventual semi-finalists Ohai, Edendale and Wyndham. Then a small reprieve for a week when we delivered an empathetic victory against Tokanui. Injuries were to be the theme for the remainder of the season which meant guys playing more minutes per game that I would like to have seen, but even worse, having to play out of position. I am grateful to all those players who were chucked into the deep end for their efforts. I know it’s not easy.

There were 2 low points this season, and one in particular that left me disillusioned with our judicial system in Southland Rugby. The cheap shot of Josh Mackie against Ohai robbed us of a very talented young rugby player and robbed Josh of his season. I hope Josh goes on to have a long Rugby career and he doesn’t suffer any long term effects. The high shot on Dil against the same team infuriates me. Again, we were robbed of one of our best players, Dil was obviously put through quite an ordeal and despite us doing everything we could, Rugby Southland could not muster the ability to find a way to ensure player welfare is upheld in our game. On the flip side though, the absolute stand out for me this year was the performances of the rookies. Pete, Harry, Josh, Brodie and Dutchy all played some top shelf rugby. If this is Waikiwi’s future, then we are in good shape.

A big thanks to Cheese and Pitcher for their help this season. They are the ironmen of the club. The usual suspects delivered consistently all season, but one player who stood out this year was Ben Maw. He played every position in the backline except for halfback, and played them all well. He tries he scored were well deserved and offers us an insight to his workload around the paddock.

It is important to keep things in perspective and looking back over the past 2 years we have come a long way as a team. The skills alone are vastly improved. We have played some great rugby which was highlighted by the phases strung together against Midlands in the first round. With a bit more luck this year, then things may have been different. I stand by my stance that Div 1 was the right division for us to be in. As rugby players, we must challenge ourselves. This is the only way to improve.

Looking forward we know that depth in the squad is massively important. Therefore, we all need to be recruiting in the off season and not only for the Seniors. The stronger the B’s are, the stronger we are. Waikiwi is a great club to be involved with and as I said to the team after the last team, I’ve never had so much fun losing.

A massive thanks to Alfie. He is passionate about this team and he has really been through the ringer this season as we battle to fill the team sheet. He has shouldered and deflected a lot off Scotty and I, which has allowed us to concentrate on coaching. Finally a big thanks to Nick and the team. It was a tough old season, but we showed some real character. If the guts of this team can keep it together and continue to work hard, results will follow.

Cheers, Derek.

Senior C’s

There was no ‘semi-final playoff’ for the Waikiwi ‘Cs’ team this year. First time in the past 4 years. 2016 was a lean year for the Waikiwi C team, with player numbers down and results not all going our way. Players having a year off, work commitments, injuries, and a few defectors to other clubs, and although the seniors started their season well with good numbers, new talent and early winning results, with injuries and having moved back up a division, there were no spare players around to help bolster the C team.

However we held a team together, having at least 15 or 16 available for all games, except for Waikaia first round, with players away through work commitments and injury and Wyndham second round, when a few of us were away to watch the All Blacks take on the Welsh in Dunedin. Wyndham re-neging on a deal to play us on the free weekend before the Welsh test. Both clubs did assist and provide spare players to even up the contests on the day.

Results were a reflection of the circumstances, but we did perform with credit and showed good heart on the paddock. Generally started slowly in the first halves, giving teams a head start, before closing in on them during the second. We gained 2 wins for the season, 1 first round and 1 second round, both against old rivals Waikaka which is always good! We also secured a hard-earned draw against Tokanui down at Tokanui who we hadn’t played for a few years and were always going to be an unknown quantity, and hard work down there!

We had a hard core of regulars at training for the bulk of the season, but dropped off towards the later part, but good to be able to field a team for most of the time Saturdays. Also on our bye weekends, we organised and helped out the Central Pirates to field a team, with reserves to play the Hawaiian Delights out at Central Pirates and Collegiate at Collegiate in town. And they reciprocated by helping make up our numbers for the last game of the year against Waikaka at home to finish the season. Welcome and appreciated by both clubs.

The competition didn’t get any easier, but we have beaten these teams in the past! Waikaia is still strong as ever, Western C’s tough at home, Pioneer big improvers with good numbers. But it was Wyndham who had a big year, winning our competition, and also the senior Division 1 competition!

The team is still in good heart!! With good numbers attending the end of year prize giving. Players receiving trophies, well done! Cheese always a hard campaigner, Pitcher a strong comeback season, both along with Chay also contributing to the seniors well, Craig Iverson always a loyal supporter and now back playing, great to see! Newcomer young Ray Phillips who was our highest point scorer, with some good tries and also kicks as well, awesome! Sheldon first season for about 6 or 7 years, well done! In fact, everybody in the team who fronted up, played with a lot of heart and contributed well! Thanks to all regulars and new players to the team.

Very much a rebuilding year for the Waikiwi C’s, but we need to keep it up for next year! So hope everybody is getting back into their fitness, looking out for some fresh recruits, we need some fresh legs! Christmas isn’t far way, and RUGBY SEASON is just around the corner.

All the best for Christmas and New Year
Regards, J. Hunter

Committee
A group of people who put heap of effort in and don’t chase the Kudos. Your 2016 Junior Committee; Delwyn Thompson, Jane Brown, Des Cairns, Jonathan Flay, Raymond (Ox) McWilliam, Bruce McIntyre, Greg Elder and Jodi Fisken. A fantastic committee who really have your best interests at heart (and have to put up with me).

Coaches, Managers and Helpers
Thank you very much. Your time, effort and the skill level of these teams is in large part to this group of people. Without a team of passionate coaches, we really have our backs against the wall. Many have been coaching for many years. The way the players have looked up to you at prize giving, the stories, their behaviour and the team unity is credit to you all.

The funding we got through ILT was a massive boost for the Juniors. This funding allowed us to purchase all the gear needed and required rather than rationing it. We were also able to replace a full set of jerseys & supply new sets of rips. We also were able to tidy up some other things in the club that were on the ‘hope to get to’ list. Side line behaviour was a major focus for the club this year as well as across Southland Club and New Zealand Rugby, I am happy to report that nothing was ever brought to the committee so that alone is a great achievement, as abuse and aggression won’t be tolerated here at Waikiwi Junior Rugby as it is all about the kids.

Prize giving was a success and it was great to see all the parents and grandparents there celebrating the success of their siblings, it was another strong year for the club, which saw us as strong as ever in the representation at representative level which is great to see and I can only thank those that represented Waikiwi at that next level for their display of our clubs mana. Look forward to seeing you next year.
