Wanderers League Title Defence is on a Knife Edge!

“We still have a chance to retain the League Title but will have to be at our best on the final Match Day to be held 28 June.” John Myatt, Team Captain

Sitting in 2nd place behind leaders Retro Rovers who had a 3 point advantage, Wakefield Wanderers travelled to Powerleague, Sheffield to take part in the 5th round games of the South Yorkshire WF League on Wednesday 31st May.

This time the Wanderers played 4 games and bagged 7 points whilst Retro played an additional game and secured 9 points. The final outcome for the League will be complicated by the fact that the original Concord team have folded and their results will be removed but a newly formed team continue for remaining fixtures. Not clear yet how that will affect our points and ranking.

The Wanderers got off to a good start winning their first game against Sheffield Utd 1-0 with Mike Thompson finding the net. Next up were Barnsley who, having found a new striker, put 2 past our defence in very quick time. The Wanderers were roundly defeated 1-4, despite new boy Chris Lund scoring his first goal in tournament play

Game 3 against the reformed Concord side saw the best performance of the afternoon from Wanderers with Holbrow and Pedley sharing the striker responsibility. We ran out 4-0 winners with Pedley securing a hat trick.

The final game was always going to be a tough one against League leaders’ Retro Rovers. There were very few clear opportunities and a very hard fought contest saw the spoils shared with a scoreless draw.
