Wigan Walkers 50+ Tournament - 2nd November 2017

7 months ago By David Holbrow

“Words are such feeble things.” ― George Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier

“A disappointing start to the new manager/captains reign but plenty to take away for developing a potentially strong over 50s team for future tournaments and Leagues once everyone gets used to playing together.” Chris Lund, Team Captain

The Wanderers, consisting of, Chris Lund, David Holbrow, Mark Fielden, Mick Wilde, Laurence Watkins, Jim Pedley and John Perrins were drawn in the same group as: Crosby, Wigan Whites and Northgate.

With captain Chris Lund opting out of starting the opening game in order to assess his "new charges", the wanderers got off to a flying start with a convincing 3-0 win over Crosby, with 2 goals from Jim Pedley and one by Dave Holbrow.

However, the games against the following two teams, Wigan Whites, (the eventual tournament winners), losing 2-0, and then to Northgate, another strong experienced team, losing 3-1, after opening the scoring with a rare Chris Lund left footed shot.
Wanderers were then drawn against Wigan Blue in the 3rd/4th place play off and sadly came away with a 3-1 loss, with Laurence Watkins getting on the score sheet.
