“We went into this game with a "team" plan, and every member of the team contributed to a very successful tournament win.”
Chris Lund, Team Captain
For this 50+ cup tournament, the Wanderers 50+ team were drawn in a group which included Scarborough, Armley, York City FCF(B) and Retro Rovers who we had to play once, with the resultant league winners and runners up from each of the two groups to proceed to the semis.
The Wanderers squad consisted of Chris Lund, Mick Wilde, John Jones, Ian Walker, Tony Baker, Mark Fielden and Dave Bullock.
The pre match plan was to play a 2-2-1 formation, with four players being ever constant (unless of injury) Goalkeeper Mick Wilde, midfielders Tony Baker and Mark Fielden, with Dave Bullock the front man.
Game 1 v Scarborough. Won 1-0 Scorer Dave Bullock
Wakefield started brightly and played good passing and possession football, and at one stage I thought that the Wanderers curse had returned, because despite lots of chances on goal we were unable to find the back of the net. Thankfully our persistence paid off and a Dave Bullock strike ensured we started with 3 points. Chris Lund stood down for the first game.
Game 2 v Armley Won 4-2 Scorers: Dave Bullock 2, Mark Fielden Tony Baker.
An Armley team fielding one or two "younger" players but also consisted of our own "veteran" Dave Alexander were our next opponents. A better performance, despite going 1-0 down, we kept our heads and played ourselves out of trouble. goals by Dave Bullock (2), Mark Fielden and Tony Baker with one each was showing how good the system was working. Ian Walker stood down for this game.
Game 3 v York City CFC(B) Won 2-1 Scorers: Dave Bullock and Tony Baker.
With other results going our way, we knew that 3 points from this game would ensure us at least runners up, so a competent relaxed performance would all that would be required. we took our chances and let the ball do the work for us to ensure the 3 points. Dave Bullock and Tony baker continuing to score the goals. Chris Lund stepped down for this game.
Game 4 v Retro Rovers. Lost 1-2 Scorer. Dave Bullock
Sadly this was our worst performance of the day, whatever went right in the previous 3 matches didn't on this. We just didn't gel, and despite a Dave Bullock penalty were deservedly beaten by a strong Retro team who with this victory pipped us to top spot. Ian Walker stood down.
Semi-Final v Easingwold Drew 3-3 (Wakefield won 3-2 on penalties). Scorers: Dave Bullock, Chris Lund, Tony Baker.
Having finished runners up we were drawn, Easingwold, the winners of the other league which had "our own" matt Pennington playing for them. They strolled into a 2-0 lead before Wakefield started to control the game and pulled it back to 2-2 with goals from Dave Bullock and Chris Lund. This thrilling end to end encounter ended 3-3 with Tony baker getting the third for Wakefield.
No extra time and straight to penalties which Wakefield won 3-2 with goals from Chris Lund, Dave Bullock and our goalie Mick Wilde who not only scored, but kept three clean sheets against the opposition kicks. John Jones an ever present stalwart in the first 4 games stepped down.
THE FINAL. v Retro Rovers Won 4-2 Scorers: Dave Bullock (2), Tony Baker, Mark Fielden
Having beaten us in the earlier rounds, Retro must have fancied their chances against us in the final, especially with our poor showing against them. However, from the moment the whistle went until the ref blew for full time, the wanderers never looked like losing this game. possession, passing, marking and movement off the ball ensured a well deserved victory. JJ gracefully stood down to allow the team that won the semi to compete in the final
15 goals scored. 10 conceded.
Dave Bullock 8 (+1 in the penalty shoot out)
Tony Baker 4 (sadly missed his penalty kick)
Mark Fielden 2 (didn't take a penalty)
Chris Lund 1 (+1 in the penalty shoot out.
Mick Wilde (Goalie) (1 in the penalty shoot out)
We went into this game with a "team" plan, and every member of the team contributed to a very successful tournament win. (whilst stood down on one of the games, I overhead another team's members expressing their admiration of the way that Wakefield played the game!!!)
