Walcot Colts edge out Avonvale Colts in a tense encounter
Walcot and Avonvale ‘fought’ each other to a standstill in a feisty local derby last Sunday.
The intensity of this contest was evident from the start of the game with both sets of forwards refusing to take a backward step. However Walcot fly half Harry Bullard was able to force his way over the line for a try following a line-out on the visitor’s 22 meter-line.
Walcot centre Max Machin nudged his side further ahead with a fine try which he scored by outpacing the visitor’s defence, after taking a smart angle off of a midfield breakdown.
However just before half time Avonvale got themselves back into the game when winger Tom vanGelden scored a try in the corner after tracking a well-orchestrated break from deep within the visitor’s half
The second half became rather scrappy due to both sides losing players to injury, partially caused by the physical nature of the encounter. Avonvale were able to seize an advantage in this period with Will Able scoring a try under the posts in the final quarter, when the hosts had a player in the sin bin. Thereafter Avonvale threw everything into the final minutes in a desperate attempt to force the win, but were thwarted by resolute Walcot defending.
Conversions were added by Avonvale fly half Nye Rawlings and centre Jamie Hall and skipper Sam Firth for Walcot.
