Colts make the Final of the Staffs Plate
Wolverhampton 12 Walsall 15
Walsall travelled to local rivals, Wolverhampton to play the semifinal of the Staffs Plate in what turned out to be the closest and most tense match of the whole season!!
The sun was shining, the pitch was hard and bumpy and in the first half Walsall were against the wind. Despite these conditions, Walsall started well - they were quicker to the breakdown and turned the ball over many times. However, despite Walsall having the run of the play, Wolverhampton were the first to put points on the board following a catch and drive.
A determined Walsall came straight back when Connor McGuirk broke through their line and Jordan Lay converted. At half time Walsall were 7-5 in the lead.
Territory and possession were evenly balanced throughout the match and every ball was fiercely contested. Wolverhampton kept attacking but Walsall defence proved excellent with Jordan Sproule ( fly half), Connor Pitt (inside centre) and Jordan Lay (outside centre) working particularly well together.
In the second half Wolverhampton took the lead with a breakaway try but again Walsall were quick to level up the scores when at the 5m line, Liam Taylor (birthday boy) made a dummy pass and drove over the line.
The scores were now level and a nail biting 10 minutes ensued. With 5 minutes to go Walsall were awarded a penalty which Connor Pitt ably kicked over the bars giving Walsall a 3 point lead. However, in the next phase of play, Wolverhampton were awarded a penalty and had the chance to level but the ball failed to go over. Wolverhampton, then camped on the Walsall line and repeatedly tried to put the ball down but were prevented by an excellent defence. The sound of the refs final whistle never sounded sweeter!!
