Comfortable Win!

Walsall 30 Bedworth 14

Walsall produced a competent performance against a hard working Bedworth outfit. But there was a general feeling of disappointment, as the hosts failed to maintain the high standard of play that they had displayed in the opening quarter of the game.
The dynamic, Pete Fitzgerald, opened the scoring after just three minutes. Rod Dickson,Geoffrey Williamson and scrum half Lloyd had all made good ground before the prop forward dummied his way over the line from fifteen meters. Wood added the conversion and a penalty five minutes later after Dickson and Halbert had made strong defence breaking runs. The hosts continued to play a high tempo games and were threatening to overwhelm their Warwickshire opponents. During this time they scored two more well created tries to make the score 20 – 0 after just eighteen minutes.
The first of these scores came as a result of Dickson,Lloyd and full back Naylor combining well to give Alex Greenslade the space to dart over from twenty meters. The young student produced a similar piece of skill six minutes later. This time a neat Wootton break set up a good position and Naylor delivered a well-timed pass to put Greenslade away for his eighteenth try of the season. The next thirty minutes of play was rather frustrating, as Walsall seemed to lose all of their momentum and the whole game became a rather ponderous affair. It was left to Steve Halbert, to lift everyone’s spirits just before the half time whistle. The Walsall captain covered fifty meters as he exchanged passes with Greenslade before getting the final touching down.
The second half started in a similar fashion with the Delves Road team producing some good rugby with Mike Benson and Dickson in particular making good ground with some strong ball carries. But there were no scores on this occasion, and it was the visitors that got the next try. A period of pressure resulted in centre Allcock forcing his way over the line. Walsall continued to make errors and were still failing to retain possession on a regular basis. Eventually they did secure a good attacking position and No 8 Dickson scored a good try after a scrum near the Bedworth line.
The hosts tried to maintain their momentum, but two wayward passes saw Bedworth full back Harwood intercept and stroll over the line. Foster added another conversion to make it 30 – 14. The final five minutes saw Walsall try to run the ball at every opportunity and Chris Mould and Rafa Ingelmo both made fifty meter runs. But, once again, the support was slow to arrive or the ball was spilled.
The final whistle signalled the end of another season and gave Walsall their sixteenth victory of this year’s league campaign. Recent defeats saw the team slip to sixth position in the final Midlands One West league table.
