Ludlow Excel on the New Walsall Pitch.
Walsall 6 Ludlow 47
It was a historical day at Walsall Rugby Club last Saturday as their new artificial grass pitch was officially opened. The action started at midday with Walsall Ladies playing Wolverhampton Ladies. This was followed by Walsall Veterans taking on a Wednesbury team. They were both entertaining games. The final action of the day was the league game between Walsall and Ludlow. This proved to be a rather disappointing encounter for the home team. Young Romanian Dragos Valentin and Ben Cooper made their Walsall debuts. Throughout the game, the visitors were quick to show that they were very comfortable on playing on the artificial surface. They moved the ball at pace and were quick in support. Walsall had opportunities to add to their two penalties, but struggled to retain possession at vital moments. The Shropshire team were always keen to play an expansive game and were rewarded with four first half tries. While Will Hennessey scored Walsall’s only points with two well struck penalties during the first period. Although the host were always competitive during the second half, they struggled to cope with speed of the Ludlow attacks. They combined together well, adding another three tries during the second period.
This latest result was the team’s third successive defeat and there will be concerns at Delves Road as they face some strong opposition in the coming weeks. The number of injuries within the squad is a major factor in the recent performances. Two more players were forced to leave the field during this latest encounter, this makes eight regular players sidelined at the moment. This week’s match at Newcastle under Lyme will see more players being involved for the first time this season.
