Walsall Fail to Convert Pressure into Points
Camp Hill 10 Walsall 3
Walsall, for the second successive game failed to convert the pressure that they had exerted, into a winning position. Promotion chasing Camp Hill were their latest opponents. While the hosts eventually secured a league win, the visitors had to be content with a losing bonus point. Walsall found themselves in good attacking positions on several occasions. But failed to put together any sustained scoring attacks. Captain, Roger Weston, did cross the line. But it was adjudged that the ball had been passed forward. The ever-reliable Weston was also off target with three penalty kicks that he would usually expect to convert. Edwards had given the hosts the lead with a ninth minute penalty. Walsall came back strongly and good drives by Hal Gozukucuk,Simon Weaver, George Perkins and James Hickman resulted in a penalty that Weston put over from thirty meters. The bitterly cold, wet conditions made handling very difficult and the visitors intended passing options often came to a slippery end. Walsall, once again, suffered injuries during the game. Early in the second half No8 H Gozukucuk was forced to leave the field, soon to be followed by centre Nico Watkins. While during the final ten minutes, scrum half Dean Ainger, limped off to be replaced by Zak Edwards.
The only try of the game came with fifteen minutes left to play. Former Walsall captain, Steve Halbert made a forty meters defence breaking run to set up a scrum near the Walsall tryline. This resulted in the hosts making several drives with No8 Leach, eventually being driven over. Robinson added the conversion. The final ten minutes was virtually all played deep in Camp Hill territory. The hosts defended well, but Walsall were guilty of failing to maintain much cohesion in their attacks. The final whistle was greeted with joy by the hosts, but with despair by the visitors. Although a solitary losing bonus point was some consolation.
