Sunday 15th March - Broad Street away
Yet another tough morning in Cov
Today we travelled away to Broad Street expecting a tough game, and thats exactlywhat we got. Broad Street had a good mix of skill and speed but also defended extremely well.
We had lots of players unavailable today taking a squad of 13 as opposed to up to 20 that we have previously been able to pick from. That said, the 13 thirteen players today showed a lot of heart and courage in what was yet another bitterly cold morning of rugby.
The players were split into a team of 7 and a team 6. I took the 7 and Gareth kindly took the 6 for their games.
My team -
Game 1 (lost 7-5)
Players (tries) - Rhys, Freddie (2), Cian (1), Liam (2), Harry, Oliver and Jude
Game 2 (won 7-2)
Players (tries) - Rhys (1), Freddie (2), Cian, Liam (1), Harry (1), Oliver and Jude (2)
As above, the first game was a very tough match, with Broad Streets team being the much stronger of the 2. That said, our defence was solid, but some very loose passing and knock ons provided Broad Street with several opportunities to punish us which they duly did. The second game, we really switched on, stopped the sloppy passing and ball dropping and really knuckled down in defence. Some big hits from both sides, but Walsalls running and support play proved the difference in this game. Special mentions to Liam, Cian and Jude. All three showed massive improvement today with some awesome defence (particularly Liam!), but Jude and Cian both scored fantastic tries today. Oliver, whilst new to the team showed ever increasing confidence in the tackle. Harry was as solid as ever in defence but provided the pass of the day to see Freddie score one of his 4 tries for the day. An thumb injury saw Rhys come off early in the 2nd game after some good strong running, but overall it was a good solid team performance.
From Gareth -
Game 1 (Lost 9-8)
Players (tries) - James (5), Hendrik (3), Jonathan, Lucas, Jack and Charlie
Game 2 (lost 10-7)
Players (tries) - James (5), Hendrik (2), Jonathan, Lucas, Jack and Charlie
In both games all the players played extremely well, with James scoring some fantastic tries most of which were long range corner flagging efforts!
Hendrik scored some great tries himself with some barnstorming runs, revelling in the physicality.
Lucas was putting in lots of effort despite them being much bigger and more physical, but unfortunately picked up an injury.
Jonathan and Jack stuck at it despite the cold, with some good passing on the run from Jonathan. Charlie also supported his team mates well.
It was evident that the first game took a lot of the lads with the cold and the lack of any subs. By the time they got the final game they were all very cold and fatigue was a factor. That said they performed extremely well.
Thanks to Broad Street for hosting us. An impressive set up they have there.
