Walsall u 11's Triumphant

Rusty Walsall battle hard to secure a fine victory.

On a glorious September morning Walsall took a while to get back into the groove against an excellent Sillhilians team.

Over the summer we have lost a few players but have gained some new recruits and Jack, Finn and Sam were all fantastic in their first competitive match. Well done all of you.

Match 1 - Walsall 3 - Silhilians 6

Walsall were guilty of completely forgetting everything we had worked on over the last 4 weeks and disappointingly reverted to bad habits! On the rare occasions Walsall did remember to run straight and at pace all too often they took contact in an upright position and embarrassingly lost possession time and again. Silhilians had 2 excellent strike runners and who passed and ran very well and Walsall were too bunched in defence leaving acres of space that were exploited. Walsall did however begin to make some in roads and there were 3 good trieds from Brandon, Joe D and Lewis . Every member of the squad made an appearance and it was a chance to blow off the cobwebs in preparation for the next 2 games.

Match 2 - Walsall 3 - Silhilians 2

Game 2 saw Louis P, Will, Lewis W, Hansen, Teddy, Amrit, Sam, Gurdit and Finn start and there was a great improvement all over. Strong running, committed rucking and better passing saw tries come Walsall's way. Hansen scored a cracker following a kick ahead by Joe C. Whist the defence was still too narrow and again Sils exploited this it was a real delight to see Finn score his first try for the club. Dominic took over where Finn left off also crossing for a try. It was a much improved performance and what was most telling was the change in the Silhilians defence when Walsall ran straight, at pace and with power. Well done to everyone.

Match 3 - Walsall 3 - Silhilians 2

The final game saw one of the best tries I have seen the side score. Gurdit ripped the ball from Silhilians grasp and drove forward with real menace, well supported by Joe C who took the ball on and had Teddy outside and in space. Joe C gave a quality pass which Teddy took and he was simply too hot to handle and sped over. A fantastic try. Silhilians struck to it but were beginning to look tired but again there strong running and pace saw them cross twice from within their own half. Walsall sealed the win and honours for the day with two more tries one from Brandon who is unstoppable when running at pace and another clinical finish by Teddy.

A decent but erratic performance which is to be expected at the first match of the season. We expect a more consistent approach next week when we are away at Sutton. Fantastic debuts for Jack, Sam and Finn which is really pleasing. Hopefully Joe D will be fit next week after his ankle injury. Jake really took it to the opposition and ran very well.

Well done everyone, a good win against a good side.

Man of the Match - Joe Coleman - Very few errors, excellent passing to players in space and on two occasions superb drift defence working with Lewis W to save tries.
