Wednesbury 31 v Walsall 41 Development Game

Wednesbury 9 Players Walsall 15 Players = 12 A Side = Great Advert For Rugby Core Values

Walsall travelled to Wednesbury today with injuries and players off sick. They got there to find Wednesbury were struggling as well for players. The weather was excellent for rugby today, sunny and dry. In the end Wednesbury had 9 and Walsall 15, after asking for volunteers 3 players put on the Wednesbury shirt ( Sam F , Joe P and Jamie G ). This showing the true spirit of Staffordshire junior rugby. 12 a side rugby commenced.

So after a late KO the game got under way, Walsall collected the ball with Joe W collecting the drop out and making a good surging run with a cheek spin out of the first tackle of the game. Walsall pushed deep into the opposition half. They added pressure and forced a line out near the home teams try line. The resulting throw came to fin who gladly took it under his wing and set sail towards Wednesbury's try line. After riding a few tackles he grounded it to score after 2mins played. Conversion missed. Wednesbury kick off and Walsall push Wednesbury back deep again into their 22. Continuity between phase play was excellent today gifting Lewis a well worked team try that went through 5 pairs of hands, all starting from a probing run from Joel. Joe W converted it for 2 extra points. Play went on from the re-start with Lewis pouncing on a free ball making strong headway fully 30metres before off loading with a one handed pass to Max, for him to power over the line uncontested and unluckily fumble the ball forward whilst putting it down. It was an great piece of interplay. Max being Max he was more determined to make amends with a strong supporting run 5 mins later latching on to good pass and using his balance and power to score this time. Conversion missed.
Wednesbury battled hard after the water break, and applied some good pressure of their own pushing Walsall back into their 22. The Bandits defence held out and managed to steal a scrum again against the head. This meant there was a chance to construction good phase play which saw Liam collect a pass from mid field and use his great balance to slip under the radar and score near the posts. Conversion was put over by Joe W. Wednesbury kick off again deeper this time, making Walsall run from deep this time. The forwards linked really well with each other and created a sound platform for the backs to attack Wednesbury's try line. After several phases Arnold managed a ferocious powerful run to cut through the defence and score near the posts, another quality team effort to score. Try converted by Joe W.

Half Time Wednesbury 7 Walsall 31

Half Time team talk and 3 more players volunteered to swap shirts ( Max , Lewis , Joel ) with the first 3 that volunteered. Walsall kicked off Lewis collected the ball at pace, his balance and foot work carried it 60 meters to score for Wednesbury, catching Walsall off guard. Wednesbury seemed to half the edge in the second half scoring again three times in 14 mins two finished off by Max for Wednesbury. The best one was a well timed pass from Lewis using an angled run to catch the ball at full speed and run it in under the posts, very hard to defend against. This put the game level at 31-31. Ben W made a break down his left wing using power and balance to good effect making 30metres. After the water break Max and Lewis swapped with Sam F and Ben W. The extra edge was back in Walsall's favour as the match was drawing to an end, Pressure pushed Walsall deep into Wednesbury's 22 and they secured a good ruck for scrum half Joe W to show a sublime side step that sent his opposite number the wrong way leaving space to squeeze over and score his try. Obviously watch Ben Youngs yesterday against London Welsh. Well done Joe W.
Conversion missed. The last try was made by several pairs of hands linking up together and working the ball up the pitch and a perfectly weighted passed found it way to Max again who used raw straight line power to push his body over the line for his third try. Conversion missed.
