A Fine Win For Our U14s
It wasn't just the wind that was whistling all morning...
This morning our boys were out to right-the-wrongs of a 17-17 draw against Bees back in October and they did so in convincing style in very windy conditions. The pressure was on the hosts right from their kick-off with Walsall winning possession in their 22 and after several phases, Alex Garton burst through the defence in trademark style to give Ben Pitt a simple early conversion.
Bees were strong up front so the breakdown and set-pieces were strongly contested but Walsall soon put them to the sword again, this time through a set move off the back of a scrum. Joe Pearce picked up and offloaded in contact to Ben Pitt , who in turn found Harry Bucknall with a well-timed pass and Harry set off from his own 10m line on a dazzling run, beating the covering winger and full-back, to score under the posts. Again, a simple conversion from Ben put Walsall firmly in control.
With the wind at his back, Ben put in some clever kicks behind the Bees defence and on one such occasion Kieran Higgins and James Rogers secured possession 15m from the line. The forwards did well to keep the ball over the next few phases and then, from 5m out, Joe collected the ball from the back of a ruck and side-stepped his way over the line on the stroke of half-time, with Ben securing the extras with an excellent kick from out wide.
The second half was a much tighter affair and Bees made a real game of it although, much to our boys’ credit, the hosts didn’t look like scoring at any point. Some strong runs from Adam Tamilio, Cory Clarke-Selby and Kieran kept Bees busy but, unfortunately, the try tally remained at three.
As has been the case in recent matches, Nurse Kerry was kept on her toes and we all hope the walking wounded have recovered from their respective knocks. A penalty count of 20 - with 16 awarded against Walsall - would normally suggest a disciplinary issue but I think I'm safe in saying that this was a one-off...
Thanks to the boys for their efforts and to all the parents for bringing them along.
