A New Dawn ?
A joy to write about!
Hello readers. For all of you who weren’t at the game today, I have two pieces of information for you.
Firstly, (and I hope you are sitting down) we WON!
Secondly, (sit down again) we WON!
I know technically that’s only one piece of information, but it’s such a big one I thought it was worth mentioning twice…On with the match report.
What a joy it was to wake up on a Sunday morning that was crisp and sunny, a great day for a rugby game. With a big Squad turning out for Walsall today, there was going to be no numerical advantage for the opposition today. We were missing some stalwarts in Rory Kennedy and Matt Eccleston; Matt especially had a valid excuse for not playing due to the fact that he broke his collar bone in the game against Trentham last week. I think Rory was looking for Dracula in Whitby.
As the game kicked off it became obvious that although it was not a league game, all the Walsall lads were up for today’s challenge. Bromsgrove had brought a big pack of players who were intent on trying to crash through our defences, but our lads held firm. Captain Tom Aston was marshalling the proceedings with increasing confidence. On 20 minutes however, a series of penalties and scrums awarded to Bromsgrove led to the first try of the game. 0-5
Then Walsall took the game by the scruff of the neck. Continued pressure by the whole team led to a great charge down of a kick and opportunist Try by the industrious Dan Hemming. Zach Edwards hit the post from the conversion. 5-5.
Everyone was giving 100%. Ni was quick to pounce on a loose ball close to his own line after a Bromsgrove attack, he quickly made space to throw the ball to Tom Olivo who cleared the ball up field to start a Walsall attack. Great play. Soon after Walsall won the ball in a breakdown, the ball was passed out to Tom Olivo who went on a maizey run to the outside, drew in the last defender then timed his pass out to Zach Edwards perfectly. Zach Edwards sprinted under the posts and converted the kick.
Half time 12-5.
I don’t know how the half time talk went, but one of the coaches, mentioning no names ( but it was G T) said to me he was going to do something unmentionable with his walking stick to some of the forwards if they didn’t start getting to the breakdowns quicker.
The second half was a hard fought affair with few chances for either side. Walsall were close to going over several times but just couldn’t get across the whitewash. Instead, cleverly, Tom Aston decided to build scoreboard pressure by getting Zach Edwards to kick two penalties. 18-5.
Karl Pothecary was brilliant in taking down the big Bromsgrove runners. Just like to mention Ben Fortes-Mayer at this point who finished off a great Walsall attack by dragging 3 defenders across the line to put the ball down, only to have it ruled out for a knock on. Great effort Ben. Don’t worry, Tries will come.
With 10 minutes to go a penalty to Bromsgrove led to a Try and a conversion. 18-12
A nervy last few minutes then. But Walsall held firm. New player Attar Singh was playing brilliantly, as was everyone. Finally, Dan Hemming kicked the ball out to end the game. Phew. A WIN!
I did say last week that a win was coming…Well done lads.
Thanks to Bromsgrove for a game played in the best of spirits.
Can’t wait for next week!
