Let me say this from the off, I'm not going to find fault with Walsall's team performance in any way.
On a fine Spring morning, Ashby Colts were the visitors to Walsall under 17's.
It was obvious from the get go that Ashby had brought a team full of big lads. With our team ravaged by injuries and other commitments, and a real ring rustiness due to the fact there hasn't been a game since the end of January, it was always going to be a tough day!
I was right!
On a positive note, it took a full 8 minutes for Ashby to score the first Try of the game after a flowing attacking move. I'm afraid it was the first of six unanswered Try's in a best forgotten first half. My notes do refer to a good run by Nico, a great Captain's last ditch tackle by Tom Aston and a good run from Josh Townrow.
Half time Walsall 0- 36 Ashby.
Half time meant a bit of a stern lecture from our coaches (Gary), Pride and self respect was the theme! Kinda worked.
The second half was still mostly one sided, but a more determined Walsall effort saw Ashby only cross the whitewash 3 more times. Tom Olivo made the biggest tackle of the day. Well done chap.
A mention for all the lads that stepped in to play for us today including a Ben & Josh from the under 18's.
Final score Walsall 0-53 Ashby. Thanks to Ashby for playing the game in the best of spirits!
Lessons learned. Including me. I must always remember to stand upwind of Terry (country folk).
On a plus point, it was good to see a team in claret and blue playing well.
