Wantage Town Reserves 2-3 Abingdon Utd

Wantage Town Reserves were in Hellenic League Floodlit Cup action on Tuesday night when they took on Andy Zoldan's Abingdon Utd of the Hellenic League Premier Division.

It was a cracking game with the visitors finally winning 3-2 but the Reserves put in a brave and hard working display.

Incredibly the first half was a tight affair with the Freds battling manfully against their more vastly experienced and higher division visitors - Ian Lovegrove's marshalled the backline superbly and the teams went in all square.

Within 1 minute though some of that work was undone when former Fred Anaclet Odhiambo headed home past Timbrell to open the scoring. But Wantage replied immediately. Johhny Haist poking home to show the fighting spirit of the hosts. Just before the hour United were awarded a penalty with Odhiambo converted for his 2nd of the game.

Wantage threw on Barton and Whiting into the fray to try and push on but with 20 minutes to go Josh Crook seemingly sealed the win for Abingdon. But once more the Freds showed their spirit with an instant reply from Johnny Haist - his 2nd of the game - driving home from close range on 71.

Wantage fought to the end - Haist almost completing a hat-trick but at full time it ended 3-2 to the visitors but the Wantage Reserves can hold their heads high and go into the weekend local derby with Letcombe in great confidence.
