First Team Through To Semi Final
Wantage Ease Past Woodcote SR
Wantage entertained Thames Valley Premier League side Woodcote Stoke Row in the quarter-final of the Reading Invitation Senior Cup and were made to work hard for what turned out to be a comfortable win.
After spurning a couple of early chances Wantage were punished in the 18th minute when a couple of rash challenges in the area saw Woodcote awarded a penalty which Michael Davies gleefully despatched past Curtis Meare.
Wantage responded well, and two minutes later Steve Robertson was denied at point-blank range by keeper Sonny Wheeler, and on 23 minutes Ben Willoughby fired high and wide when well placed. And they pulled level in the 31st minute when Jack Powell spotted Wheeler off his line and lofted the ball over him from 25 yards out.
But Woodcote weren’t prepared to roll over and restricted Wantage to a few half chances until a minute before the break when a loose ball from a corner was cleared only as far as Paul Alder on the corner of the area who hooked it back over his shoulder and into the net to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Still Woodcote refused to be over-awed by their higher status opponents and it took until the 65th minute before Wantage added a third through Jim Glover. But Woodcote reduced the deficit to just one almost immediately, Sam Tucker being allowed to run unopposed with the ball from the half-way line before slotting past Meare.
Steve Robertson’s strike on 68 minutes made it 4-2, and as the visitors started to tire on the heavy pitch Wantage never looked back.
Eight minutes from time Willoughby lined up a free-kick following a foul on Ryan Markham and curled it beautifully in to the top corner to make it 5-2, and then three minutes into stoppage time Markham blasted home the sixth from the spot after Robertson had been hauled down in the area.
