First Team Win Again
Wantage edge out Bracknell in end to end tie
Wantage hosted Bracknell in an important league game. The hosts were looking to make it 9 games unbeaten and close the 3 point lead that our visitors had.
Thorne and Sadler were restored to the starting line up with Heap and Alder making way.
It was our visitors who got off to the livelier start with wide players Bowerman and Maloney stretching the play and forcing Wantage onto the back foot. A Bowerman run down the line lead to the first corner, where a Bracknell player perhaps should have done better instead of heading wide.
Wantage slowly started to get a foothold in the game and unsurprisingly the excellent Dunmall was at the centre of this. His persistence in the penalty area saw him square the ball to the onrushing Glover who fired home for the opening goal on 24 minutes.
The game was now end to end with Bracknell using their quality in wide areas well and Wantage happy to counter attack. Chances came and went for Wantage's Sadler and Bracknell’s Grant as the half looked like ending 1-0. However this was not the case as Bracknell countered at speed forcing Dan Comer to concede a foul. From that kick the ball was delivered for Grant to superbly header home on 44 minutes. Credit to the forward as it really was a superb header. Half time 1-1.
The second half started as the first half ended with Bracknell on the front foot and the turnaround was soon complete in the 48th minutes; midfielder Gilkes was afforded too much space and slotted the ball into the far corner. The game was swinging towards our visitors but thankfully the lead didn’t last long. A quick throw in by Sadler caught Bracknell’s back four out of shape and Dunmall squared for Thorne who cut in and gave the keeper no chance on 56 minutes.
Only seven minutes later and it was 3-2 to the hosts as the prolific Steve Robertson got his 13th goal of an impressive season. The goal was owed to the quality of Mark Flanagan who stayed forward and played a superb ball to Glover whose shot was parried and Robertson finished with ease.
The remaining 25 minutes were evenly contested with Wantage pressing well and forcing Bracknell into one or two errors. Curtis Meare had to be alert to clear a through ball and also calmly claimed a few crosses. The hosts were delighted to hear the final whistle and gain a vital three points against a very good side.
We look forward to the return fixture a week on Tuesday. Make no mistake about it, Bracknell will not lose many games of football this season and will be an even tougher opponent on their own pitch.
But before then we host Burnham on Saturday, 3pm kick-off at Alfredian Park.
