First Team's Winning Run Continues
Five Star performance
Wantage welcomed bottom of the league Burnham to Alfredian Park looking to make it 10 games undefeated and 9 wins out of 10.
The Burnham team sheet told a story of difficulty though, manager Paris being only able to name 11 with one substitute.
The game started with a midfield battle with Burnham impressing with their commitment and energy levels, with Paris non-stop on the side-line barking orders.
Wantage hit the post on 7 minutes with a snapshot from Dunmall rebounding that allowed the home defence to clear, and should have taken the lead on 26 minutes when a Mark Flanagan cross found Steve Robertson in the centre of the goal unmarked, but he headed wide!.
Wantage opened the scoring via the old school route one, Curtis Meare despatching from his hands quickly over the top of the Burnham back four who were all at sea, allowing Jack Dunmall to run through and slot in the far corner to make it 1-0 in the 29th minute.
Robertson made amends for his earlier miss two minutes later, this time a cross from Nick Thorne found him in the same position, his initial header was saved but he pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0.
A few more chances followed for Wantage but the whistle blew and the Freds went in 2 to the good.
Wantage started the 2nd half quickly and made it 3-0 after 55 minutes, Dunmall squaring for Robertson to score for a couple of yards out.
Two minutes later saw the goal of the game; Thorne let a throw in come across his body about 25 yards out, before hitting a first time half volley which sailed over the keeper and into the top corner.
Being 4-0 after 57 minutes Wantage took their foot off the gas a bit and silly mistakes crept in as it all became a bit uneasy.
Burnham were reduced to 10 with about three minutes left, Charlie Fox, already booked for a clumsy challenge, produced a swan dive inside the box trying to earn a penalty. The referee applied the letter of the law and issued a second yellow.
Robertson finished the scoring in injury time, after Dunmall had beaten 3 defenders his shot was parried by goalkeeper Sam Bunting, but Robertson was on hand to tap home and complete his first hat trick in Green (albeit from a combined total of 8 yards)!
Wantage go on to an important week next, Bracknell away on Tuesday followed by a FA Vase game at home to Cadbury Heath of the Toolstation league on Saturday. Full of confidence they are looking to continue their run.
