First Team Beat Nomads
Wantage hit four to move up to 2nd!
Wantage welcomed Oxford City Nomads to Alfredian Park for a vital game.
The home side welcomed back goalkeeper Curtis Meare and attacking midfielder Nick Thorne.
The opening 15 minutes were pleasing on the eye with both sides playing out from the back. Nomads were beginning to take a few too many risks and as the game progressed Wantage started winning the ball back in dangerous areas. This led to the opening goal with Mark Flanagan starting and finishing the move. Firstly he won the ball well before crossing to Robertson, who fired across goal and Flanagan reacted quickest to put the Freds 1-0 up in the 19th minute.
The remainder of the first half saw some promising moves from the hosts break down and Nomads had an excellent spell before half time but were unable to fully test Meare in the Wantage goal. 1-0 at half time.
The second half started how the first ended, with Nomads on the front foot and Wantage having to work hard and play on the counter. One such counter attack made it 2-0. Robertson worked some space out wide before delivering a great cross for the impressive Jack Powell to volley home on 59 minutes.
2-0 with half an hour to go and the hosts seemed to be in complete control. However within one minute the deficit was halved. A long ball over the top wasn’t dealt with by Meare and the ball looped over Meare and into the net. Mulvany was credited with the goal, but it really was a soft goal to give away.
The game was now becoming stretched with both sides trading attacks. Mulvany nearly got his second of the evening, but was unable to control when well placed. Thankfully for the hosts there was soon to be another counter attacking home goal. Glover got on the end of a flowing breakaway to brilliantly fire home in the 77th minute. That was Glover’s sixth goal of an impressive season.
Three soon became four in the 81st minute when the industrious Ben Willoughby was found out wide by Powell, before controlling and curling round the keeper for his first goal for the Freds.
The game ended 4-1. A superb victory for the hosts. Nomads placed some lovely football and were well in the game for 75 minutes.
Next up the Freds travel to Brackley Town Saints, where we will be looking for a better result than when we visited in the Floodlit Cup last month.
